To clarify for people who are less familiar with the CBA:

The dollar amount of this extension won't be determined until the salary cap is set in July 2015.  This $90 million is a placeholder using last year's cap numbers.  You may see it re-calculated in 10 days when the cap is set, and then see that happen again next year, when the extension goes into effect.  If Rondo were to get the max next summer from the Celtics, he would get the same amount that Irving winds up getting (i.e. that $100 million figure that was talked about earlier today).  At any rate, Irving's deal is exactly what Rondo is asking for, to the penny.  It's also what Love will be asking for from his new team if he gets traded.  Based on the NBA's salary cap projections, I think this deal will wind up being north of $105 million over 5 years, with a year one salary of about $19 million.

Wouldn't the fact that Kyrie is getting this amount hurt Rondo's chances of getting signed to the max?

Why?

I'm assuming you believe Irving to be superior to Rondo with this comment.  While I don't think that's as settled of a question, I'll agree to it for now.

The max salary is used to suppress salaries.  Both owners, and especially players, know this.  Perhaps Irving could get more than Rondo in an open market without any artificial limitations like a max salary, but when prices are capped you see items (or players) of different demand (or quality) with the same price.
