I think it would be smart to try to bundle one of Jennings or Smith in any deal, but ultimately Detroit is just gonna have to be happy with pieces or picks for Monroe, or pay him the max.

I bet they pay him

Maybe. A three way between kings, celtics, and pistons is something to keep your eyes open for.

Rondo and smith to kings
Monroe to Boston
Fillers and assets to pistons
So we trade away Rondo for just Monroe?? Im pretty sure wed get Mclemore and Thomas as part of the deal as well..

Would rather get Monroe/Thomas and STAUSKAS...not Mclemore.
this would be a great pickup for us.

I'd be up for this. Send Rondo, Sully and Bogans to Detroit for Smith and Monroe.

Doubt Detroit would do it.

Naw , Monroe not the type center celtics need .   And the celtics don't need another player in Smith who only plays hard when he feels like it .  Smith off the bench as role player is his destiny , unless,he has new awakening ....he is drag on a team that's not championship calibre.  Not the same guy as five years ago.

Totally Pass on this deal......bad fit.

3 way with Kings has been something I've been suspicious about since Stauskas was drafted. I think that pick was semi for us (assuming all other complexities of deal can be worked out).

I suspect:
Kings get Rondo and J Smoove
Set gets J Green and McLemore
Celtics get Stauskas, Monroe and Isaiah Thomas

Isaiah would be stop gap starting PG until Smart is ready. Stauskas and James Young (and maybe AB) give Celts a lot of versatility on the wings and Monroe would be C of future.

Monroe doesn't need to be a rim protector for this to work.   Josh Smith is a rim protector at the PF spot, and that allows you to have a non-rim protector at center.

Plus Monroe is still a better rim protector than any big on our roster aside from maybe Humphrey's and Faverani.

Makes sense. Well, some sense. Hard to pull off though. Gotta sell Monroe.
I think you could sell Monroe on getting a max deal, a ton of touches and the history of the Celtics.

I would like to see Isaiah and/or McLemore come back to us in that deal with two first going to Detroit. The question is who would Detroit be willing to take back from Sacto to make the salaries match (our non guaranteed deals and our TPE would cover a lot of the salary they are sending out).
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Can't see Rondo leaving unless they include Mclemore or Stauskas and a future pick from Sacto.

The reason you get Monroe is because Rondo will turn him from a 15 point, 9 rebound guy to a 22 point, 12 rebound monster with all his terrific assists. Rondo would also be great at making staying around the basket more appealing to Smith to stop him drifting off and taking 18 footers.

The main problem with Monroe/Smith is making Smith a full time power forward with some rim protection ability- I don't think Josh Smith is that guy unless you can somehow force him to stay in the paint on both ends. Zero jumpshot policy, only allowed to take shots 10 feet or less, preferably in the post.
Surround him them with shooters and you might be a sniff at the 2nd round. Problem is now you've got Rondo and Smart (no shooters) on the perimeter other than Green.

I could perhaps see something like
Rondo + Smith to SAC.
Sacto's line up now looks like:
Rondo,
Stauskas,
Gay,
Smith,
Cousins
.

Then Green+Derrick Williams+ Celtics 2015 Clippers pick to Detroit. They take these two players because they shed Josh Smith's contract VERY early while getting good production back that is far cheaper and expiring sooner.
Pistons line up is now:

Jennings
Caldwell Pope
Green
Wiliams
Drummond

To Celtics:
Ben Mclemore, 2015 Kings pick, 2016 Pistons pick, 2017 Kings pick.

We run a line up of:

Smart
Mclemore
Young
Sully
Ed Davis (or some other young upside cheap free agent or D Leaguer.)

With Olynyk off the bench.

Our picks are now:
Our own 2015+Kings 2015 pick+Phily 2015 pick (if it conveys).
Our own 2016+Detroit 2016 pick+Brooklyn 2016 pick
Our own 2017 pick+ Brooklyn 2017 pick swap+ Kings 2017 pick.
Our own 2018+Brooklyn 2018

And now we find ourselves with a MONSTROUS haul of picks for Rondo and Jeff Green and a total of 10 guaranteed firsts through 2018 and possibly 11.
The value of the Detroit 2016 pick and the Kings 2015 pick would be huge. I'd also say that if Rondo went down, or Cousins went down, that Kings team would be up Doo-Doo creek and that pick would skyrocket.

We can then trade up in future drafts, or move these picks as more disgruntled stars come along and Smart and Mclemore develop.

If you asked the Kings for two first round picks if they could add Rondo and Smith to Gay and Cousins they 100% yes.
If you ask the Pistons would they give up their 2016 first round pick to shed Josh Smith's deal AND get back Derrick Williams, I think they say yes.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.
