Cleveland is such a ridiculous franchise. Draft the star player, idiots.
The only way this makes sense is if Lebron has secretly committed, but wants NBA-ready talent around him.
I tend to agree.
Are they just scared to make another number one selection? Bennett was such a clear mistake that they've become gun-shy?
It could be. Or, it could be an example of them trying to outsmart everybody, like they did with Bennett. Rather than take Noel or Oladipo, they reached for a fat tweener.
I guess if I'm being charitable, a return of #4 (Embiid or Exum), Afflalo, and whatever player they get for #12 isn't horrible, if their decision is to "win now" rather than wait on a potential superstar. I definitely think it's the wrong call, though.
Afflalo is a pretty darn good player and at 28 has a lot of years left. At 4 they will get a player in that first tier and who could very well be the best player in the draft 5 years from now. At 12 they will still get a pretty solid player (DX has Nurkick and .net has Hood). I mean that seems like a pretty darn good trade if you ask me. You get an established quality starter in his prime, a top 4 player (and there is a clear drop off at that point), and another pretty good prospect all for a top 4 player.
Let's say they make the trade and keep them all. Embiid drops to 4 and they pick up Hood at 12. They still have 33 as well (say KJ McDaniels). That would leave them
PG - Irving, Jack
SG - Afflalo, Waiters
SF - Hood, McDaniels, Karasev
PF - Thompson, Bennett
C - Varejao, Embiid, Zeller
They would still have rights to Hawes and Deng, who if they brought back would make a pretty nice team and a clear mid-level playoff team in the East. If Embiid comes back and stays healthy and lives up to his potential he easily could be the best player in the draft and a real homerun for them.
