Cleveland is such a ridiculous franchise.  Draft the star player, idiots.

The only way this makes sense is if Lebron has secretly committed, but wants NBA-ready talent around him.

I tend to agree.

Are they just scared to make another number one selection? Bennett was such a clear mistake that they've become gun-shy?

It could be.  Or, it could be an example of them trying to outsmart everybody, like they did with Bennett.  Rather than take Noel or Oladipo, they reached for a fat tweener.

I guess if I'm being charitable, a return of #4 (Embiid or Exum), Afflalo, and whatever player they get for #12 isn't horrible, if their decision is to "win now" rather than wait on a potential superstar.  I definitely think it's the wrong call, though.

I don't know if its being gunshy, plain inept, or conflict between ownership & the front office.

For their sake, one would hope its just posturing in the hours leading up to the draft and they keep it & go Wiggins or Parker but you don't really know with that franchise given its recent track record.

Would've paid to see what Chris Grant would've done in this situation.

Well they're definitely trying to outsmart people. Like I said earlier if they think Embiid is the pick and that because of his medical issues that they can get him at 4 that'd be an amazing haul for whom you really wanted to to take number 1.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Boston fans that have dreams of Embiid falling to us should certainly be hoping this trade doesn't happen.

Not a bad idea.

I presume they will only trade one of the two picks. Probably the #12. It's hard to see them getting better value for a #4 and #12 (either separately or combined) than they could get for the #1 so I doubt they are looking to trade. I am guessing it's the #4 they plan on keeping because the drop-off from #1 to #12 is huge.

And that they can get the guy they want at #4 (probably Embiid then, maybe Vonleh/Randle) and are looking to move the #12 to pickup a quality starter to give their team better balance heading into next season.

It's a terrible idea.  Take the best player and be done with it.  They over think things which is why they drafted Waiters who is a terrible fit with Irving despite Drummond being available.  It's why they took a chubby guy with sleep apnea and asthma first overall last year.  They should take Wiggins or Parker and be glad of their fortune.

They might not be sold on Wiggins or Parker.

Both players have a lot of doubters out there. Both have significant flaws that could stop them from becoming star players in the NBA.

If they are not sure on those guys, trading down is a good option.

Afflalo is a pretty darn good player and at 28 has a lot of years left.  At 4 they will get a player in that first tier and who could very well be the best player in the draft 5 years from now.  At 12 they will still get a pretty solid player (DX has Nurkick and .net has Hood).  I mean that seems like a pretty darn good trade if you ask me.  You get an established quality starter in his prime, a top 4 player (and there is a clear drop off at that point), and another pretty good prospect all for a top 4 player.

Let's say they make the trade and keep them all.  Embiid drops to 4 and they pick up Hood at 12.  They still have 33 as well (say KJ McDaniels).  That would leave them

PG - Irving, Jack
SG - Afflalo, Waiters
SF - Hood, McDaniels, Karasev
PF - Thompson, Bennett
C - Varejao, Embiid, Zeller

They would still have rights to Hawes and Deng, who if they brought back would make a pretty nice team and a clear mid-level playoff team in the East.  If Embiid comes back and stays healthy and lives up to his potential he easily could be the best player in the draft and a real homerun for them.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

Cleveland and Orlando nowhere on a possible deal for the No. 1 pick, team sources tell Yahoo Sports. "Total bullEdited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.," one executive says.

Does anyone else find it hilarious that Cleveland is just getting around to working out Exum today??  What have they been doing for the last 6 weeks??  Nobody in that room thought it was possible that they would trade pick and would need to see other prospects???

Cleveland and Orlando have exchanged proposals on No. 1 pick, but there's nothing that's gathered traction, sources tell Yahoo.

Seems bogus if their intent is to have roster flexibility to make room for Lebron plus another max type (Melo, Love, Bosh?)
