Assuming Love and Asik are in Green after the draft and Melo isn't coming to boston. Does a S&T with the Cavs for Deng makes sense? I package built around Green might be enough for the Cavs who will look pretty bad if they lose Deng for nothing. But is Deng enough of an upgrade over the younger Green? Where Green will make around 8.7mill next season Deng will be likely looking for a deal in the 12mill range. I don't know if he is that much better then Green but I do know he is a very consistent player, always plays hard, great defender and is a great locker room leader.

How good would this starting 5 be?

Rondo
Avery
Deng
Love
Asik
Mavs
Wiz
Hornet

In my mind that would be a contender. Fantastic defense with Rondo, Avery, Deng and Asik with great scoring from Love and pretty balanced scoring (15-20) from Rondo, Bradley and Deng. And also fantastic rebounding team.

No interest in trading Green for Deng.

They're roughly the same age, but Deng has played about 10,000 more minutes. Give me Green for less money and far less wear.

It would certainly be solid lineup, but I do wonder if that is enough outside shooting. Rondo, Bradley & Deng would be excellent on defense, but are a bit lacking as an overall threat from deep. That trio would need an elite shooter off the bench, or possibly in place of AB in the starting lineup.

Also, the thing with Deng is, he is going to get paid. I'm not sure that I love him at his likely price point. Unless his next coach is better at limiting his minutes, he's going to break down eventually. I'd hate to be stuck with 2 or 3 years of an injured and overpaid Deng.

Scoring would continue to be a problem with that lineup

With Asik, Rondo and Bradley as starters, I too feel that Green's more efficient shooting percentages make him a better fit than Deng on that lineup.  Use the extra 3 million to retain Bayless  (or draft a 3 and D rookie if we still have our no. 17) and we are good.

Only if Green has to be part of an Asik or Love deal, and we can't get Melo.  Otherwise not worth the maybe slight improvement.

You mean like we have with Gerald Wallace? Because that is exactly who I see Deng turning into in a couple of years. I am perfectly happy with Green at his price and contract. If we can make a major upgrade, then we should go for it, but I don't consider Deng a major upgrade - if at all - over Green.

If I were looking for an upgrade on Green, I would prefer someone who is a better three-point shooter than Green.

Deng is one of my favourite non-Celtics players and is a much better defender than Green but has too many miles on the clock to justify the extra salary.
