I don't fully understand how it works.  I've read Larry Coon's explanation, and it left me even more confused.

Is there someone out there who can explain it?

For example, if we were to use it to get Omer Asik, how would that work?  Could we trade Sully straight up for Asik, using the TPE to make up the extra salary coming back?

You can take in salary up to the TE -- thing of it as a placeholder for a real contract that's worth, say, $10 million. Or a salary gift-card, if that makes it easier.

We can't just take Asik from the Rockets for draft rights because we'd be over the Luxury Tax, but if we sent, say, Jeff Green to the 76ers for Elliot Williams (not that we would, of course, that's just an example), we'd have enough room to just "trade" Asik for our Exception -- which would then create one for Houston based on the 8.3 million difference in salary they sent out.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
From what I understand, no players can be involved along with the trade exception, only draft picks. The player coming back has to fit into the amount of a single trade exception (not a combination of them). Both of these parameters work with Asik. If we were to make a deal for him and Houston wanted more, it would have to be in the form of draft picks, which is why a deal may not come to fruition.

TPs to both of you.  I'm still not sure I completely get it, though.

This is sort of correct.

You can trade players and the TPE in the same deal, as long as they are not COMBINED to bring back salary greater than the value of the TPE.

To use an Asik scenario, Boston could trade Green and the TPE to acquire Asik and Lin, because Asik's salary is less than the value of the TPE, and Lin matches Green's salary.*

*However, there's also the luxury tax threshold to contend with. Boston cannot exceed the LT threshold during this current season (ending June 30), so the above trade scenario technically could only take place after the July moratorium.

Our current payroll for next year is about $56million, the cap is going to be set at about $64million, Asik makes about $8million.

It seems to me like it would be a pretty close call.  Maybe Danny can do enough wriggling to make it work.

So, I'm going to go with the crazy assumption that this could happen and throw in the fantasy that we win the lottery.

Rondo/Bradley/Pressey
Wiggins/Johnson/Babb
Green/Warren/Wallace
Olynyk/Sullinger/Bass
Asik/Faverani/Anthony

Also worth noting -- a trade exception has a one-year deadline. Ours expires on the anniversary of the Pierce/KG trade.

edit: yeah, I'm working so I just used the current payroll for the C's via the Trade Machine.
