Smith's knee injury has not improved, and so the Rockets have cut him for the healthier Pittman.

I wonder if there's any point in picking Smith up from waivers.

I would - Smith put up some solid numbers (in limited minutes) last year and can play the 5.  He'd be a decent backup option if he gets healthy, or at the very least Danny could sign him to one of his patented 3 year with only 1 guaranteed deals to enable future transactions.

Doing so would put us over the luxury tax, so no.

In that case I'd like to change my answer.  Maybe do that goofy 3 year deal in the offseason, though.

Is that true? I thought the C's had a fair amount of breathing room under the tax line, enough to accommodate a minimum level contract.

The C's have enough room to accommodate a pro-rated minimum contract.  But to claim Smith from waivers would mean the his full-year contract would count against the luxury tax, which would put the team over the tax by a few hundred thousand dollars.  If he clears waivers, of course the Ca could try to sign him.  But considering he's already been paid for the entire year, I don't see it being worth Smith's while to sign new contract the last few days of this season unless it is fully guaranteed for next year.   When the summer starts, he'll have more suitors (playoff teams obviously aren't interested now), so it make sense to wait.

Get him in the off season.
We'll most likely get rid of Bass, so he'd be a good replacement.

Smith signs with Chicago, contract guaranteed through next season.

Chicago waives Tornike Shengelia to open up the required roster spot for Smith.
