" I am a big D.A. fan and a bigger R.R. fan but he just shared shared pillow talk on the radio in a way that cannot be endearing to Rajon or his agent. Danny isn't stupid. He's not a robot either but he likes to think he's pretty smart and it seems like he just sent a message but the person supposed to get that message appears to be everybody else first and Rajon 2nd. A lot of folks have a real blindspot when it comes to putting themselves in other peoples shoes. If you were Rajon and woke up to hear that what would you think? I wonder what Rajon's old friend Perk thought? Think he picked up the phone and gave his old friend a call and some advice?? "
yeah - Danny thinks he is brilliant and soooooo much smarter and more business savvy than that old soft-hearted Red was.
trouble is, Danny ain't that smart - he's made a couple of very good late first-round draft picks and had the two trades one summer that rebuilt the team. well basically, he was lucky to have gotten KG in one of his trades and KG rebuilt the team and the franchise and the Celtic pedigree by getting the culture back to where it is supposed to be. Danny has made a whole bunch of moves that either hurt the team or resulted in treading water.
Danny worst trait is his blind spot to the players as people - yeah, it's a business, but that's not all it is. a team sport, and even more so, the Boston Celtics, is about team morale and togetherness. Ainge constantly alienates his guys by shopping them around the league. then he acts stunned when Ray Allen bolts for the enemy and signs for less money out of spite.
until Danny changes the way he treats his players, the Celts franchise is going to continue to grow the reputation as a place to rent and not buy. very sad for the one franchise that was always the opposite under Red's leadership.
Thank you for saying this; you're absolutely dead on here, so Tommy Point for you, sir! It used to be that players didn't want to come here because of the terrible racial issue (thankfully that has gone the way of the dodo), but when KG and Ray came here and won I think that that closed the door on that attitude towards the franchise. So why aren't we ever an attractive destination for free agents? Ainge. It's just what you said about how he treats players and constantly shops them around. Who would ever want to play for a guy like that? People are not assets, they are human beings, and until that changes, no one will ever want to play here. I remember watching an espn top 5 reasons you can't blame about Len Bias and they mentioned that McHale and DJ could have been traded to Dallas in 88-89 (I think) for Sam Perkins, Detlef Schrempf, and 1 or 2 1st round picks, but Red stepped in and said, "no, we want these players to retire here," or something. Alan Cohen then mentioned that, "Red did convince us, when we had these discussions, that
the Celtic Tradition had been built on loyalty." Auerbach then followed with,
"if you want your ball players to be loyal to you and your organization, you've got to be prepared to give loyalty." Bingo. I've always felt that because Ainge was traded as a player it negatively affected his attitude towards the subject, despite the fact that, according to The Big Three book, he all but orchestrated the deal to Sacramento because he was unhappy with his contract. It was a stupid trade and it really makes no sense to me as to why they moved him, but that still shouldn't give him the whole, "if I was traded, anyone can be traded," mentality.
I also don't think he drafts well, or thinks a few steps ahead. It's not that he's made mistakes, it's that the players he's drafted since 2007 (Bradley and Sullinger aside, but the Sully pick was a no-brainer so I don't give him that much credit for that one) aren't even in the league anymore, and that's pathetic. There's no way that a moron like me should be able to, in not much time at all, watch youtube highlights, read some scouting reports, and see what people think of a certain player on this blog or elsewhere and be able to pick out better players (who we had a legitimate chance to draft) year after year after year than Danny Ainge with his vast resources. The guy has absolutely no idea what he's doing imho or how to sustain a great run.
We need a time machine.
