This is why we need to get the Asik trade done...

By getting Asik now, we essentially have until the trade deadline to determine the next 2-3 year direction of the franchise. Let's assume we give up Bass and the Clipper's first round pick. I think the trade actually makes us better this year. Now, we don't want to be in playoff purgatory with this deal (4-8th seed) but it would be pretty likely. The timing is perfect with Rondo coming back. It gives the current team w/ the addition of Rondo and Asik basically a two month audition before the trade deadline to determine our direction.

If Rondo + Asik makes this team look like its only a couple of pieces away from being a contender, then we'll ride out the season and pick up some parts when Humphries etc come off the books.

Now, to the most important part of the deal...If Asik doesn't gel and Rondo is slow to get back to form, I think Ainge shops Asik again. At the trade deadline, Asik's value is likely to be higher than it is now (since he's played limited minutes and has sulked this year).

Morey is not gonna trade him to Western contender. But we will. I could really see us holding our own auction for him with someone who needs rim protection like OKC or Portland. If we could unload Lee and get back picks plus a young big (Steven Adams anyone) I'd declare it a success.

Either way, doing this deal now gives us a nice window to see what direction we can go in the future.

If we trade for Asik now we definitely aren't trading him again before the trade deadline. A two month audition? Takes much longer for a team to develop chemistry especially when you're best player will be recovering from an injury.

And if we trade for Asik with plans of trading him again, why not take the pieces we would trade for Asik and use them to get this mystery player that we really wanted?

It wouldn't be prudent to make such rash decisions on a player, not to mention the disruption to team harmony and the damaging of the Celtics' reputation in the eyes of the players. Why would any player or agent trust Ainge in the future? The NBA is a business, sure, but you still need to maintain some modicum of trust and respect for your partners.

Rondo will be coming off major surgery when he returns in January and it will be hard accurately gauge anything that early.

Finally, by the deadline it would already be too late to start fully tanking. Assuming the trade improves the team's play, they will be even further off the tanking pace than they already are now.

I think you're correct to an extent. Rondo would make Asik look like Hakeem if he made Perkins look so good. It also slides Sully back to the PF spot and we become a solid 1st round exit with
Rondo
Bradley
Green
sully
asik

Free agents and their agents are looking at us seriously too.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I'm for this lineup......sweet ........long as Green, KO and Sully stay put .......good start to assembling a nice club.

Bass , Hump , Wallace, Lee .....need to go,to contenders ......all but Wallace are playing top form .......really hate to see Hump leave actually.
