Conceptually, I'm down, but would prefer a Green-level player at center instead. Green and Webster locks up a lot $$ at forward

They have a Green-level player at center.  That is exactly what Gortat is.

If they are trying to make the Playoffs then the $$ should not be the concern. They need talent, and this deal will give them talent.
Otto Porter has more talent than Jeff Green and frankly Ariza is a better fit for them.  Awful trade for Washington.

We dont know that, i mean if Porter is more talented than Green. All I know is Porter is still unproven and Green is and will be a very good 2nd option behind Wall.

And Ariza is a better fit because he stretches the floor? Jeff Green is no slouch on shooting the threes either. He can score on ISO's better than Ariza too. I think the only thing that Ariza is better is defense.

PG: Jrue Holiday / Isaiah Thomas / Larry Hughes
SG: Paul George / Aaron McKie / Bradley Beal
SF: Paul Pierce / Tayshaun Prince / Brian Scalabrine
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / Shareef Abdur-Raheem / Ben Simmons
C: Jermaine O'neal / Ben Wallace

I agree that Washington is an interesting trade partner but I am not sure that either Green or Wallace represent an upgrade over Ariza.  Webster is not horrible for a back-up at SG and SF so they can be patient and let Porter develop.

I think we have to give more if we want to go this route.  Maybe Wallace and one of our surplus future picks for Ariza and Porter.  Even that, still not sure why Wizards do it.

Trades are tough when you don't have all that much to offer.

The only reason to make a trade at this point is to obtain one of two things. We either need to get young potential talent, or draft picks. Clearing salary cap space in order to sign some A list free agent is a pipe dream. At best we are going to attract a supporting player like a Gordon Hayward (due to his Butler connection). We can build through the draft. We can build by adding young potential talent if a contender wants a piece like Wallace to give them a better chance. We can also provide a luxury cap team relief with an expiring for young talent. Clearing up a bunch of space and making a run at a Lebron James or a CP3 or even a Carmelo type is wishful thinking.

Green is one of the few pieces that we have that actually can be a piece of a contender and young enough to still be playing well. No thanks unless it includes a couple first rounders.

clearing cap room isn't just for free agents, you can also make a LOT more trades with cap room (and use trade exceptions like the one we have from the Pierce/KG deal)

We probably don't need to do anything drastic to add potential talent; we have a bunch of that in players and picks.  I mean, we can make lists.

We surely don't need role players.  At any position, really, except maybe C.  Nice to go 3 deep at C with 7-footers.

We need to add talent at the top, not potential talent.  We have enough picks already, and players yet to reach their potential.

We need to trade/cash in "potential" for a present-day ringer or two.

Or simply let it ride.

Green would be the 3rd option behind Beal and Wall, which is good for both parties.

Don't see Washington trading a number three overall pick for green

I can see DC doing it.  Look at their history.

the 5th pick for Foye and Miller

the 5th pick for Jamison.

Interesting. There is some precedence there.

Same GM for all of it.  Every case, trying to win now.

I like it, Jeff. Nice thinking.

If I'm just being candid, I'd even do the deal without Porter. Problem is his salary is needed in the deal -- especially considering both sides are up against the tax. The rest of the options on their roster don't really work for one reason or another.

For the sake of argument, if the Wiz wouldn't give up Porter, and you waited until 12/15, the trade could be:

WAS gets: Green, Bass
BOS gets: Ariza, Vessely, Singleton, Harrington, Temple

The Cs need to cut Brooks and either Humphries or Bogans to make the deal (whichever they feel they'd be less likely to need in a potential trade at the deadline -- probably Humphries -- maybe they could even buy him out).

In that case, I think both teams still squeeze under the lux tax.

I'm sure this would be unpopular here, but i think a pure salary dump of Green & Bass is perfectly logical for the Cs. the top asset they can trade for right now is flexibility.

I hope we use the exception it is an asset.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I am not sure Was is so hot to trade Ariza right now. He worked hard this past summer and has come out extremely solid in his first 4 games (17ppg/9.3rpg/3.0apg/2.0spg). Throw in a very solid prospect in Porter and they may not see Green as an upgrade - especially since they are of similar age.

I would probably go for it because of the money we save, but can see Washington thinking twice...
