It's kind fo what hockey is doing... building a 'team' through fitting needs. Not just throwing the best players out there.
Don't kid yourself.  Even if they were putting the best players out there, Rondo would not be one of them.

Korver is a better FIBA type player than Rondo is with the way the team is constructed. Korver on that team makes them very hard to defend. True zone defenses are typically the achilles heel of Team USA, but having such great shooters makes it almost impossible to play zone against them.

The Team USA Roster is so predicatbly organized. The usual Superstars Coach K fawns over and then surrounded by all big men and pure shooters like Thompson, Hayward, Curry, and Korver. There's no room for rondo in Coach K's offense which just picks players who will get him a sure win. All these shooters and big men and no room for rondo. Even lillard, paul, and rose can shoot. Confused why rose is still on the roster. All the Rondo haters on this blog annoy me. He is a great player but not in the surefire way coach K needs to guarantee his wins. Rondo is our point guard and is very very good.
