They had to,  same problem as Hibbert,  if they didn't pay him,  somebody most certainly would in a heartbeat

The Lakers are /were after him......so this shoots, the Lakers in the behind.......

interesting. I thought max was reserved for bonafied superstars.
Definitely not true. The max is too low to be reserved for just the top players. Guys like Lebron are worth way more than the max. Likewise, guys no where near as good as him are often worth the max. Keep in mind that the market doesn't determine the contracts of guys like Lebron. Their contracts are artificially low due to the max salary. It is the borderline guys like Joe Johnson and Rashard Lewis whose contracts get determined by the market.

Since the max increases based on years of service, a lot more younger guys are worth the max than older guys. A decent number of guys are worth $16m. Few with sufficient seniority are worth $20m. Sadly, guys are often ineligible for $20m contracts when they are worth it, and then decline in ability when they can finally get what they were once worth.

Also, never forget that timing matters. Rondo is underpaid due to bad timing. George is getting a max contract due to good timing.

interesting. I thought max was reserved for bonafied superstars. paul george is probably leveraging the fact that hes one of the only players who can take on lebron.

Reserved for bonafide superstars? since when? Max contracts are given out like Halloween candy these days. It appears even after the new CBA teams still can't help themselves. Almost everybody knows max is a bit much for George, but at the same time everbody knows someone would've give him the Max if not INDY.

Given out like Halloween Candy?  Overexaggerating a little bit?  I thought Wall's max deal was a headscratcher and if Cousins gets one, that'll be a bigger one but aside from that, what team couldn't help themselves?  George would make it a whooping two whole guys who got max deals before restricted free agency this off season.

There are always going to be bad contracts.  Eric Gordon coming off knee surgery and Joe Johnson signing one of the richest deals in the league were two bad ones recently but the other max deals were worth it.

I think George has to improve his offense in order to be fully worth the max so there's a little risk here but he's such a multi-talented player that an overpay might be 2-3 million at most.  That risk is worth it given his age and the rate he's improved.  His ballhandling improved by leaps and bounds last season.
There's also the fact that he was All-NBA third team. If anyone in his draft class deserves a max contract, it is him.
