What a lousy rule. He is an adult who is about to be a multi millionaire. What's wrong with bringing a lady back to his place.  It's unAmerican....

I bet part of the class is about gold digging woman who wait out side games or hotels for players to bring them back to the rooms, just to fool them into getting married then to just divorce a year later (or after the big contract) and loose half their money.

So part of the No guest allowed is to show restraint. Could just also be for safety sake for the guest so if some thing happens they don't blame the NBA.

Bottom line is, they are there on the NBA's dollar, and if thats what the NBA wants, they should follow and not fool around.

Thats what the regular season is for! :P

I get what your saying and agree, but he is an adult and responsible for himself. If he is stupid enough to blow it away, hopefully he will learn a valuable lesson. If not, then it's his problem.

Except that, if he makes one stupid, avoidable bad life decision after another, it is probable that it will at some point negatively impact his basketball career.   Which would make it the NBA's problem.   They've guaranteed millions of dollars to these guys.

Which makes it in the best interest of the NBA to help these players learn to avoid those mistakes.

Pretty much every one of the pro leagues now have some sort of rookie orientation / guidance /mentoring program in place now.   They do it for legit reasons.
which is why the teams should be allowed to have 'good behavior' clause in a contract.  Allow them to void the contract in case of a player's suspension for drugs, arrests, etc..  particularly if the player is suspended/banned from the league.

yes, he IS an adult...he needs to learn how to follow simple rules...it's not just that he brought a woman into his room. The rule said NO GUEST, which includes both men and women and he violated that rule. If he cannot follow ONE simple rule, what makes you think that he can follow other rules in the future. It is all self discipline too! Why couldn't he wait a few more days until class was over to do what he wants to...

just a dumb decision on his part. I don't care if that is his girlfriend or mom. Rules are rules

Contracts of players who are banned for drugs are voided.  Conviction of a violent felony is a suspension of at least ten games.  There is a standard moral turpitude clause, but it has never been invoked.  An arbitrator overturned the Warriors attempt to use it after Latrell Sprewell choked PJ Carlesimo.

Looking at the CBA FAQ, it seems there is already a standard punishment in place.  Outright missing the rookie transition program is a five-game suspension.  Perhaps showing up and getting kicked out is classified as failure to attend a mandatory program, which is a standard 20K fine.

The worst thing for Shabazz would probably be if evidence was posted online showing that the woman involved is not that attractive.

If he is an adult and responsible for himself then the responsible thing to do as an adult is to follow the rules of the seminar. Part of the seminar is teaching these older boys the consequences one might come across if you still act like the child you acted like in college. It is a seminar to teach these older boys how to act like men and adults. Clearly this point was lost upon the child that is Shabazz Mohammed.
Men don't give men curfews and tell them they can only have preapproved guests in their rooms unless they have control issues or other issues.

I'm definitely curious how many of you have had jobs where you went to a seminar or went to a recruiting trip and they gave you a curfew and said you could only have preapproved guests in your room.

Were there any other rules? Keep elbows off the table perhaps?  No gum?  Will they start telling Violet Palmer she has to start wearing skirts that come down 3 inches below her knees?

Can the guy play basketball? Well then.

And do any of you actually think these things help and work?

This is a league where players can't name their kids, but oh man. That Shabazz. He is just bad news. Typical NBA and society in general. Punish a minor symptom. Never address the illness.

So, basically, the military and sports.

I've had a couple of retreats with my job that was only for the guest that was listed. It was the rules and no one cared. They did this because they didn't want to be held responsible for anything that could happen on their watch.

I forgot about the military. You got me there. Thankfully Mr. Muhammed is not yet responsible for the safety of our country. In the mean time just give him a basketball
