Why we have Pressey?   Who was argubly a superior college player to Smith.

Smith is a little more NBA proven.

So far, Nolan Smith has the NBA track record of a horrible player.  Consider that he is one of the roughly 7% of first round picks who don't get their third-year option picked up.

It's a small sample size, but he had the lowest WS/48 of any player with 250+ minutes last season.  While the stat isn't perfect, it's kind of hard to play 40+ games in two consecutive seasons with a below-zero WS/48.

So, Smith is a little more NBA proven in that he has so far been proven to suck.

Agree, only thing Smith has proved is he will be out of the league in a few years.  All too often Duke guys are system guys, Irving is an exception, Smith may not be.

You can tell this is coming from someone who doesn't follow the Trailblazers at all because Smith was never given the chance to thrive. With the breakout season Damian Lillard had, Smith was relegated down to the D-League (which he didn't think he deserved). The few minutes he did get to play clearly weren't enough and his development was hindered. I agree with the Blazers in that Portland is not the team for Nolan Smith and not keeping him for that third year is a win-win.

However, I do think he deserves a second chance somewhere, but it doesn't like it's gonna be Boston. Perhaps he'll play overseas and try again next year. Dionte Christmas-esque.
