I guess one would need to accept your premise that McHale purposefully acted against his team's best interest to consciously favor the Celtics over the Lakers.  The underlying presumption is that the Lakers had a better deal on the table but McHale's allegiance to the Celtics (rather than the Wolves), and/or his disdain for the Lakers, took precedence.

I don't buy the premise.

Oh, and all things being equal (as in, Lakers offered a deal that was deemed completely equal to the Celtics offer), most teams would opt to deal outside of their own conference.

For clarification, the presumption would be that McHale's allegiance to the Celtics AND Garnett took precedence...

Fine thread, OP. TPs for days.

Sure let's send Kevin flowers and a Hallmark card!  ;)

However we are NOT sending him Rondo unless McHale acts as a go-between in a three team trade landing us a top 3 2014 lottery pick or budding young superstar talent.

Rondo won't fit in Houston's offense.

I think Houston's offense could adjust to the upgrade from Lin to Rondo.

Possibly but I don't see harden and rondo getting along. Harden has the ball in his hands a ridiculous amount of the time and Rondo needs it even more. Two ball dominant guards of Harden and Rondos caliber wouldn't work as well as some probably think. Especially now that Dwight is there to also demand touches.

The same was said about Rondo and Pierce.

What is Houston offering that is as good as Big Al + #1 + cap space + cheap role players?

If they said Parsons + Asik + #1 for Rondo + Sullinger, would you do it?

No way..

Asik is (at best) Perk in his prime
Parsons is nothing special
They are a guaranteed payoff team so any picks would be low ones

Romeo is BY FAR the best player in that deal and sully has the potential to have a greater impact than either Asik or Parsons in a years time

Dunno.  I'm not a huge fan of tanking in the first place.  That doesn't seem to be great value for us, though.  Take out Sully, perhaps, and then it's more realistic to me.  Still not "equal value" for Rondo, but about as good as we could expect while Rondo is still rehabbing.

one good turn deserves another. McHale was very instrumental in steering KG away from the Lakers to the Cs back in 2008. If KG had gone to the Lakers, they probably lead the Championship count at this point. So I say it is time to help the old Celtic out, and if but only if Rondo wants out you ship him to Houston to team with Harden and Dwight for the chip.

I give up. I agree we should sell Rondo for peanuts to Houston. That way when the Celtics end up with the 8th pick and Rondo ends up being the next J-Kidd people can cry and regret giving up on him because he wasn't a "dirt dog"

There is no arbitrage in basketball, this is the NBA, no free lunch.

A lot of Celtics fans who were following the team before they traded for KG were lamenting the package they gave up for KG. Al Jefferson was our guy, and I could be wrong but we traded them a pick that they owed us for 2008 which eventually turned into Kevin Love, so I'm pretty sure it was a fair deal.

I have never heard that McHale did us a favor from a Celtics fan until now, usually that was an opinion help by fans of other teams who didn't know much about the players we sent.

That's not to say that Houston couldn't put together a package worthy of Rondo. They have a lot of young talent and could facilitate a deal if someone else wanted to give up some more young talent or draft picks for Asik or Lin. That being said, the idea that any team would give another a discount because of past ties probably isn't a good one.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
This thread actually made me laugh a little bit.

So you're telling me we should repay McHale for 'giving,' us KG?

Then he should repay us for the pick that landed Kevin Love, and giving him Al Jefferson, and other players that definitely filled his bench and depth up. In the NBA there is no, "you help me, and I help you."

Granted we wouldn't do anything too dirty to really take advantage of someone, because its bad business, and people rarely deal with people like that.

But to say we owe McHale a favor in return for KG is absurd.
