I mentioned this in another thread. Now that J. Smith is off the block, I think trading Rondo might be the best decision.

It would've been nice to have added another piece like Smith or Jefferson with Rondo, but now, maybe dealing him for contract dumps, expirings, draft picks and/or a really good young player might be the way to go.

Also, just to play devil's advocate, you just don't know if Rondo will be the same guy post ACL surgery and his contract will be up in 2 years.

I think if either one of these two deals comes up with either Detroit or Charlotte, you've go to do it

1.)Boston/Detroit

Celts get: Rodney Stuckey, Charlie Villanueva (expirings), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Andre Drummond

Detroit gets: Rondo, Courtney Lee, Brandon Bass, Jordan Crawford and Fab Melo

2.)Boston/Charlotte

Celts get: Ramon Sessions, Ben Gordon (both expirings), Michael Kidd Gilchrist, Brendan Haywood, 2014 draft pick traded to them from Detroit in Corey Maggette deal (top 8 protected by Detroit.)

Bobcats get: Rondo, Lee, Bass, Crawford and Fab Melo

In both deals, we get major salary relief and set ourselves up for big cap space in 2015. Also in both deals we get at least one really good young player. If we go the Charlotte route, we also get their 2014 draft pick from Detroit (top 8 protected.)

I've got to think both teams would love to have Rondo.

Detroit so they can pair him up with Josh Smith and Greg Monroe.

Charlotte so they can pair him up with Al Jefferson and Biyombo.

i dont get the obsession with wanting to trade a top 20 NBA player. How often do teams get the chance to have an elite player on their team, nonetheless with a bargain value contract?

I feel like a lot of celtic fans have been spoiled these past few years with all our great players, and they dont realize how great of a player rondo is.  why would you want stuckey and drummond? rondo is 10 times better than either player, so whats the point? to get worse players?

Because we are in a situation now where I don't think it makes sense to keep Rondo.

I would've kept him if it meant going after either Smoove, Big Al or Paul Millsap. That way, you've got the chance to remain competitive (ie a playoff team.)

But, now that the free agent market is already drying up, perhaps dealing Rondo to dump salary and get more "assets" is the way to go.

If you keep Rondo with the roster as is, you're likely a 30 win basketball team

Not good enough to make the playoffs, not bad enough to get a really good pick in 2014. Pretty much stuck in NBA purgatory which is the worse.

The only current free agent which intrigues me is Andrew Bynum and he likely goes to Dallas.
