I would do this trade, even without Shump, in a heartbeat. Sit Amare and Rondo out most of the season until they are both 1000%, we'll maybe even sit them the whole season. That would give us a 2014 lottery pick, cap flexibility and major expiring contracts across the board. With that many "chips" added to our pick stockpile, Ainge would have us in contention again come 2015. Ala 07 into 08

Not only is this a good idea, this wouldn't hurt our flexibility really for 2014 FAs either.  If we need the roster space and can't find a taker for Amare, we can waive him using the stretch provision, and the $23.4M would change to $7.5M over 3 years.  That frees up 16 mil.  Bass + Lee + Wallace all are a bigger hit to us in 2014 than that 7.5M, and even if you stretch Wallce it's still more...

As of now you are correct. However, for a while the Knicks have been the type of team that takes on salary to win now at the expense of the future. I wouldn't be shocked if they bring in people to help them win now that take up their 2015 cap space.

That stretch would hurt us in this situation. The better bet woud be allowing AS to play out his final 2 seasoons and going. In the meantime, he helps us fullfil our min salary quota while having a bunch of rookie scale contracts.

They are in win-now mode with Carmelo.  They do it to get Walalce plus 2 bench players.  Wallace is the right type of player to go with Carmelo because he doesnt need shots. 

Celtics do it, without Shumpert, and even throw in a future lottery protected pick.  You get the extra year off the books from Lee/Wallace.  Thats enough incentive right there.

I disagree.  If we let AS play this year, and then used the stretch in the final season IF we need the cap space to sign a big time FA, that reduces AS to 7.5M over 3 years (2014, 2015, 2016).  Bass is signed through 2014, and Lee and Wallace through 2015, so the hit is $15M less in 2014, and 7 less in 2015 (and of course 7 more in 2016).  This ignores Shumpert but thats because he's not dead weight salary and relatively cheap for now.
