Hi,
I couldn't find enough info on S&T rules.
Anyone can direct me to a useful website or answer the following questions?
1. Can a player refuse any s&t and just take the offer he wants at free agency?
2. Does a team have any rights regarding his FA player during free agency?
3. What are the pros and cons to wait 1st July? There was no movement this year with millsap and big al, I don't get it.
4. What happen after 10th july if there is no offer for an FA?

I think the first two are 1. yes and 2. no unless the player is restricted.

My very basic understanding is that free agent is no longer under contract with the team.

The S&T has to be agreed upon by a player because he's the one signing a new contract.

Unless restricted, FAs aren't tied to their teams.

Unfortunately I'll have to look the other two up, which I cannot do so now. My guess for 3. is that teams will have more time to explore options.

Edit: 4. thanks to my desire to procrastinate, I have looked up July 10th. It's the date when free agents can OFFICIALLY sign contracts with teams, not the date anything ends. Free agents stay the way they are until they're signed.

So for example, Josh Smith can simply ask Boston a good contract in exchange that he won't ask any S&T from Atlanta. That way Boston keep players and pick and have a better chance to compete. I don't see why any FA would want to help his previous team and deplete his new team.
If I'm right DH will go Houston for free, that's a possibility?

Well, BOS, ATL and Smith would all have to agree to the S&T I think.

If they "don't want to deplete the new team", they would have to sign as free agents.

S&T allows teams to "sign" free agents by trading their own and pay them a good contract.

Howard could go to Houston without Houston losing any assets because Houston has the cap space to make it work. Howard can straight up sign there as a free agent.

This is not the case for the Celtics. We will have to lose at least some assets and make it worthwhile for ATL.

However, if ATL cannot S&T Smoove, Smoove will just walk and sign elsewhere as an FA.

The S&T is a 3 way negotiation. Two teams and the free agent involved.

Depending of what Atlanta is willing to take as a S&T, it might be better to just create cap space. Ask a 2nd pick for kardashian to anybody interested and give this pick to get rid of crash and you have big cap space to sign 2 players and another one with the TE from KG (7.5 mill), Asik for example. You might end up with Evans, Smith and Asik, Plus we still have assets to get rid off (bogans & brooks) in 2014 with the right package (1st picks) to acquire a star. DA has flexibility plus plenty of picks. Boston future looks bright suddenly to me.
Judging Houston cap space and the china marketing for Howard and also the low income tax in Texas, don't you think LA was silly to not try a S&T with another team?
Looks like they will just have some cap relieve for DH and nothing else. With Kobe injury, don't tell me LA is dillusional to think DH will stay?

isnt it true the only leverage LA have is the fact they offer more money than Houston and Dallas, but if Dwight says F.U to the LA front office, there is nothing they can do but lose Howard without any compensation nor asset coming back...hmm

as for Smith, It will be difficult I guess for the Celtics to get Smoove if Atlanta won't cooperate, as I see it, even if Smith would love to play with best pal Rondo but Atlanta does not like anything we offer and would rather lose Josh for nothing, then there is nothing we can do about it.

1. Yes.  A sign and trade is only done so the team losing the free agent gets something and the team acquiring the player can then give the player a bigger contract than they otherwise would.  A player can just sign with the team if they have the money.

2. If the player is restricted then his last team would have matching rights.  If the player is unrestricted he can do whatever he wants.  I believe all restricted free agents are players just coming off their rookie contracts.

3. Teams are not allowed to negotiate with free agents until July 1st.  No player can sign a contract until July 10th.

4. He is still a free agent and can sign with whomever he wants within the rules of the CBA.
