There's been a lot of chatter lately regarding Rondo and where he sits with the Celtics post Doc Rivers/Kevin Garnett/Paul Pierce.

One thing I keep thinking about and haven't seen discussed much is despite what we may want to do with our all-star, what if Rondo decides he doesn't want to come back to this roster and go through a rebuild?

Pretty much leaves you 2 options:

1) Use assets (draft picks, expiring contracts, prospects, ect) to go out and get immediate help (Josh Smith, Al Jefferson, ect)

2) Simply put Rondo on the block and take the best offer

What should Danny do if Rondo expresses a strong desire to not be part of a rebuild?

We should have a 2-year plan. Rondo's trade value right now is depressed with his injury. He comes back and plays well, and his trade value should be back by the trade deadline this season. However, there'd only be half a season left before the next offseason. With all the assets we have right now, we should take advantage and make splashes this offseason and the next, and become a contending team in 2 years. For all the talk here about the 2014 draft, the 2014 free agent pool is also star-studded. How come the Lakers are gearing for the 2014 free agency and not the draft?

Trade Rondo if a good offer is there.

Keep Rondo if a good offer isn't there.

Well I think that's obvious.

Point I'm trying to make is I don't think it's too far fetched for Rondo to quietly demand a trade. Was wondering what people think would be the best option.

He doesn't really have a choice.

He's under contract and nobody is going to give us a real nice haul for him until he proves he can still be a star, especially with Pierce and Garnett gone.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

nobody knows really what the roster will look like for a couple years at least.

There maybe near total turnover several times before DA comes up with line up he can contend with

Weak GMs cave into a player's trade demands.

Strong GMs have the backbone to refuse trade demands when trading the player does not serve the team's interests.

Danny Ainge has been a strong GM in the past. I am confident he will do the right thing. It's not like we have Bryan Colangelo here and need to panic when any adversity comes his way.

Yup. And if a guy does want out, you make sure to get a king's ransom for it.

If Rondo doesn't want to return, he can pull a Rose and sit out as long as he needs to.  8)

Danny will not trade one of our top remaining player assets without a great return coming back to us.

But then again,  I can't imagine Danny letting Rondo play next year and push us into the fringe of lottery land or God forbid, 8th seed. :P There is plenty of company next year on the Good Ship TankJob so nothing is out of the question.

If I were Ainge, I would tell him his trade value is low coming off ACL surgery, and was low to begin with because of the perception that he has a poor attitude and was successful because of the big 3. I would then tell him to come back and prove those points wrong, so that he can be requested by a legit contender who will pay him a max contract extension/deal as well.

I don't expect Rondo to ask to be traded.  I think he will relish the opportunity to be the leader for the future of the Celtics.
