I'm probably one of the biggest Josh Smith haters on the board. His athleticism, versatility, and defense is enticing, no doubt. However, he has extremely poor basketball IQ, and insists on shooting mid-range and perimeter shots despite being awful at them. In 9 years in the NBA, he hasn't demonstrated the best work ethic or attitude, either. In short, he just doesn't scream of a winning player to me.

However, some here are just so infatuated with him and reports continue to say how Boston is interested. Despite my despise of him, if we could nab him for the right price, it could be a worthwhile gamble. However, what is Josh Smith's "right price"? I want to hear your thoughts on this.

Personally, I would not spend any more than $12M for him.

Keep in mind that under the current CBA, a max contract for a player with 7-9 years of experience is 30% of the cap. The projected cap for the 13-14 season is $58.5M, meaning Smith cannot be paid any more than $17.55M.

Personally, I would not spend any more than $12M for him.

It won't be that high, the reality is that it's not 30% of the cap and a different formula is used to consider the cap in the first place.

In any case, the most realistic way I see getting Josh Smith is using the Humphries expiring, which would net Josh Smith about a 15 million starting salary. I don't see him much more than that elsewhere.

I'm not a fan of Josh Smith, but he his defense and the versatility he can bring alongside Green and an uptempo to the game with Rondo intrigues me enough to entertain the idea.

In any case, I don't like cap space. The best way to build yourself a roster is keeping your payroll near the tax-line, enough to gather MLE talent and make trades with less restrictions, and keep juggling until you find the right combination. Building up a team using cap space always seemed to me a rather inadequate way to build your team.

Sorry if my numbers are wrong. I'm just going based off what Larry Coon expects, and he's as in-the-know as anybody when it comes to the CBA.

That's why you read the footnotes.

Actually, I just Googled it and multiple sources report that executives are expecting the cap to be at $58.5M.

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q16

Here's the relevant portion:

They use a different cap calculation to determine the maximum salaries, which is based on 42.14% of projected BRI rather than 44.74%. In 2005 the sides negotiated a different formula for setting the salary cap but not maximum salaries, so the two became decoupled, and this continued in the 2011 agreement. For this reason the maximum salaries are not actually 25%, 30% or 35% of the cap, and instead are a slightly lower amount. For example, even though the salary cap for 2011-12 is $58.044 million and 25% of this amount is $14.511 million, the 0-6 year maximum salary is actually $12,922,194. In addition, for 2012-13 a 5.8% increase in maximum salaries was agreed to, even though the salary cap stayed the same as 2011-12.

Oh, I see what you mean. I thought you meant the salary cap projection was wrong. That makes so much more sense, since $17.55M seemed a bit high for me.

Rondo would help his game with his assists and thereby his shot selection.  I do not think Smith is not a max player.   I think he is a 9-10 mil a year guy in reality but some bozo will give him max dollars.

I'd say around $10mm annually.

Wow, and I thought I was a big hater. If we could get Smith at $10M per, that would be a great gamble in my opinion. Realistically though, I don't think that would be a competitive offer at all, which is fine.
