Now I want to be measured about this. I know that we have been picking late in drafts but that is a pretty bad average. I hope Sullinger comes back but I worry about a back injury.

Fab Melo. I have nothing to say.

We completely blew the JaJuan Johnson pick. Not by trading him for Marshon Brooks but by not taking Chandler Parsons. Parsons was convinced we were picking him. He spoke at length about it in an interview down here in Houston before the Rockets played the C's.

J.R. Giddens. Does anyone know where he is?

I also think we bailed on a few of our number 2's but that is always a crapshoot.

I know Danny can not hit a home run every time but I am out of line to say we have been missing more than we used to? I feel like we used to be far better at drafting late than we are now.

We simply can not continue to miss on our picks. With the collective bargaining agreement the way it is it is vital to get cheap talent that can contribute. We are failing to do that.

Perhaps the time has come to be more critical of the way the Celtics are drafting. Our 16th pick is the highest since ironically Jeff Green was picked 5th and traded to Seattle (OKC). We can not foul up this draft regardless of how the experts may view it. Yes there are no "Game-Changers" at the top but it is viewed as deep regarding players who can help a team.

Here is hoping Danny repeats his Al Jefferson or Rondo draft.

2004    25    Tony Allen
2004    40    Justin Reed

* Also traded for picks to take Rondo, Perkins, and BBD

since DA has been drafting he has made 13 first round picks. 2/13 have been busts (JJJ and Giddens), 1 the jury is out on (melo). That means 10/13 have made it as nba players to some extent. Two of those ten where traded on draft day ( Foye and Green) with Green eventually coming back to the Cs. In the second round DA drafted Powe, Gnomes , BBD and even Erdan (to lesser exttent) have had nba careers.

Where Avery,Rondo, Sully and Melo may be the only DA picks on the rosters players like Perk, Big Al, TA,Powe, BBD and Delonte have all been big parts of of the celtics roster.

I can't believe the amount of crap Danny gets for 2nd round draft picks and end of the bench players. 5 of the last 10 picks were 2nd rounders. 3 of the 5 1st rounders are on the team, 2 of them are strong contributors when healthy.

I'm pasting this from the last thread about the same thing. (The last OP also mentioned Chandler Parsons - I didn't even have to change that reference!).

I think it's unreasonable to evaluate any GM's drafting ability by looking at the one or two best players who were drafted later. You can always do this in hindsight.

But of course, with hindsight in most case those players wouldn't have been available. So, Danny missed out on Chandler Parson - but so did everyone else. That fact doesn't tell you a whole lot about Danny's abilities.

I think a fairer way to do it is by asking whether, in a re-draft, the GM's picks would have gone consistently higher or consistently lower than where they were actually drafted. This tells you whether the GM usually outperforms his draft position.

I think on that dimension Danny does pretty well.

Here are my assessments, grouping players into five categories:

Definitely lower (3): Giddens, JJJ, Gerald Green

Probably lower (1): Gabe Pruitt

Wash (3): Orien Greene, Lester Hudson, Luke Harangody

Probably higher (1): E'Twuan Moore

Definitely higher ( 8 ): Al Jefferson, Delonte West, Tony Allen, Ryan Gomes, Rondo, Glen Davis, Semih Erden, Avery Bradley.

I'm holding off on evaluating 2011 for now.

Of course not all of these comparisons are equal - Rondo was a much bigger steal than Erden, for example.

But I think this makes Danny look better overall, actually. Rondo is a huge steal for where he was drafted, and Jefferson, Allen, Bradley and Davis are all extremely good performers for their draft positions.

In contrast, while JJJ and Giddens are disappointments, 60-75% of players drafted in that range never become rotation players anyway.

You can get a feel for this here:

And this analysis only goes to 2008 but ranks teams by draft performance historically.

You can put Danny's performance in perspective by looking at some other team that have drafted in comparable spots:
