Good read, typical Simmons, but I didn't like how in the first half of the article he kept talking about contracts from the 70's and 80's with nothing to compare to.

The only time he broke it down in today's dollar or gave some kind of comparison was the paragraph when he talked about the Cav's '81 off season, saying the Scot Wedman deal was like giving Ryan Anderson $15m per year, and the Otis Birdsong deal paid him as much as Kareem and more than Larry.  Could have used a whole lot more of that.  Is 500k to Rick Barry bad? $3m over 5 years for Marvin Webster, I don't really know how to take those numbers, other than knowing they're bad because Simmons is telling me so.

But here's the real killer. Multiple sources have told me that, when Oklahoma City's Sam Presti decided to shop James Harden, Golden State was his first call. He wanted Klay Thompson and a pick. The Warriors would only consider the trade if Oklahoma City took back Biedrins or Jefferson for 2013 expirings, knowing they'd get crushed by the luxury tax in 2014 with Harden's extension plus Steph Curry's extension plus David Lee plus Bogut/Jefferson/Biedrins. At that point, Presti went to Washington (offering Harden for Bradley Beal, and unbelievably getting turned down), then Houston (where the shopping heated up). Presti never ended up calling Golden State back.

Harden is only a year older than Klay Thompson.  Though if the pick was Harrison Barnes that might have been a bit much to stomach.  I still think that would have made Golden State a much better team and I'm sure they could have found trades for some of their players if they really needed to shed the dollars.

Eh. They have so many junk players it's hard to get rid of the pricey contracts. If they had cap space, then the trade for Harden was debatable but a rental would be dumb (seeing as Klay/Barnes would be locked up cheap for long)
