Ray Allen on Championships v. Money

Here's what he said in December about the David West drama...

"I'm shocked," Allen said. "I don't understand it." [...]

    Allen first heard of West's potential interest in Boston last month when Allen was playing golf in Augusta with his private banker, who coincidentally also handled West's financial affairs.

    "He told me how much I would love [West], that he and I were the same kind of guy -- cognitive thinkers," Allen said. "He said West was interested in coming to the Celtics and would be willing to come for less."

    So why does Allen think West had a change of heart?

    "Once it got down to the end, I think his ego kicked back in," Allen said. "He wanted the dollars. I guess it comes down to 'What is a championship worth to you?'"

Interesting to consider those words now that he is the Free Agent.

Maybe.  But I do think there's a difference once you've won one, which Ray has.  Also, with West, he'd be coming in as the guy who could've arguably put the C's over the top. 

With Ray, he'd be going to the defending NBA champs.  Many will perceive him as simply riding the coattails of LeBron and Co. to a second title as a role player.

the difference is, the celtics are a contender as well...with the moves we are making you could say we are going to be the 2nd best team in the East...BUT, our path is going to be harder and ray would likely play a much bigger role

apparantly though Ray would rather ride on the coat-tails behind lebron/wade because it would be an "easier" path.

ray will end up being Mike Miller...just relegated to stand in a corner and wait while lebron/wade run around and then pass to him..

The funny thing is, that I don't see Miami as a team that runs the kind of plays, that get Ray open. It's mostly isos and some  pick and roll. And that's not really his game. He will obviously get open shots, when LeBron gets doubleteamed etc. Nothing wrong with that, but is is another kind of basketball, where he definitely will be a role player.

Taking less money, minutes, a diminished role, and having to move your entire family. I guess that is what a second title is worth to Ray if he leaves.

What is a championship worth? He certainly has a better chance with the Heat. Plus they didn't try to trade him for OJ Mayo.
