What exactly is the process for signing KG over the next few days (if he decides to play and if he wants to play here)?

When is the earliest we'll know of a contract? Do we get to talk to him before everyone else? Sorry if it seems like some dumb questions...

TP's for helpful answers

July 11 is the earliest a free agent can officially sign with a team.

However, verbal agreements can be reached at any point during the July 1-10 moratorium.

In Garnett's case, I would not be surprised if he made a firm and public announcement re: retirement on Sunday, and then spent the next couple of days negotiating contract terms with the Celtics.

I read somewhere, though, that specifically in KG's case it could be as early as Saturday that a verbal agreement could be reached. Is there any validity to that or should I just ignore it?

http://espn.go.com/boston/nba/story/_/id/8101598/boston-celtics-danny-ainge-thinks-kevin-garnett-decides-july-1-ray-allen-soon

Quote
"We're having a conversation with Kevin, but we don't have any answers on whether he's coming back or not," Ainge told reporters at the Celtics' practice facility. "I'll know that by July 1. I'll be in communication with him and I'll have some sort of read on that and a better feel."

Ainge said he isn't rushing Garnett to make a decision, despite the fact that Garnett still is the most important piece the team needs to decide upon before they openly pursue other players.

"There's no deadline with Kevin," Ainge said. "Kevin's the only free agent we have that we can talk to now. We don't have to wait until July 1 because he's eligible for an extension, but the rest of the players we have to wait until July 1."

Did anyone else hear Doc on draft day?

Paraphrasing, 'I know he's coming back. I haven't spoken to him, but know he's coming back.' and he went on further with the same.

Not at all worried.

Heard on Friday's Felger and Mazz show KG has promised the C's a decision today (Sat).

As a player coming off a contract of at least 3 years, KG is eligible to agree to an extension until June 30th.  After that, he has to wait until July 11th to sign a new deal.

What this means, I have no idea.  It would be really awesome he he greed to a deal today, which would allow Tue C's to know exactly what direction to go starting Sunday.  Sunday is the 1st day teams can negotiate with free agents.

To clear up my last post; by KG making a decision today, the C's will have a much clearer picture starting Sunday.

If he re-ups, we know roughly how much money we could potentially have in FA.  If he retires, we probably just look to blow it up.

This would serve to give us as bg a jump start in negotiations starting on Sunday as we could get.

I think that KG wants to play for two more years, but will sign a three year deal for $24m.  He gets in actuality $12m a year for the years he will be playing, but is on the books for only 48m in each of the three seasons, which will allow the Cs to put the pieces around him to make another run at a title.

Never thought I would hear anyone question KG's heart. He's one of the most passionate players to ever play the game.

  • Anything is possible!
I hope and think he decides today or tomorrow. Would be good for the Celtics to know it before FA opens.

Man if he retires this will be one sad day, if he agrees to comeback. I'm in on another run for banner 18!

Can't wait to hear he will come back!

What time FA opens tomorrow???
