Any reason why we can't?

Green (S&T) + Bass (S&T) + 2013 1st rounder
for
Josh Smith

Turns two guys we ideally want coming off the bench into 1 starter. No long-term commitment to borderline starters. Atlanta gets a 2-for-1 and a pick.

It's been around a couple of times, but we can't make a sign and trade with Jeff Green, since he wasn't on our roster at the end of the season. (The rule was introduced to stop teams from signing and trading retired players to make salaries match).

Yup. Players who missed the previous season can not be included in S+Ts even if a team has their bird rights the following season.

Yeah, we need Green more this year than last to keep PP fresh, and a better benc option than Peachs.

Plus you don't want to give good talent up for a guy you might be able to get next season. Atlanta is clearing space. So the teams getting Smith will have leverage. I could see Steamer going, I think Melo will be close to his level last year by mid year if he works his butt off.

Hate to see JJJ go so fast, but Wilcox was playing really well last year before he wet down.

Just try and sign the dude in free agency next year. Any realistic trade proposal to ATL would cost us too much, and kill our chemistry and this years' chances at the finals. If we can't sign him, then whatever; on to the next player that everyone will obsess over obtaining, just because he's that good and said he likes Boston.
My pic is now, and will be Fab Melo until he posts his first official NBA dbl-dbl. This may be permanent.

We wont have enough cap space in free agency next year will we?

At this point, who knows? It depends on whether or not he makes bad signing(s) this offseason. Danny Ainge can pull a lot from out of his sleeve.

Also, Pierce and/or Garnett still may retire.

Anything can happen over the course of a season.
