if the Celtics wanted to make an unbalanced trade, taking on more salary than they send out, what has to happen with cap holds, etc. and when do these thing have to happen?

for example, say they want to trade for a guy making 10M and we are willing to send out just a draft pick to make it happen - in theory using up the Ray Allen salary slot

would we have to renounce our free agents to make that happen?  do we have to wait till July 1st to do that?  is it even possible to do that if we assume KG is signing for around $11M for one year?

I should know this and I'll try to research this but if anyone has some good straightforward answers I'd appreciate it

cheers

We have to wait until July 10th to finalize it (after the moratorium ends that starts July 1st).  And we would have to renounce most of our free agents, or sign them to lower contracts first.

Based on your specific scenario, here is what they could do:

Sign KG to $11 million on July 10th, then renounce the rest of their free agents, and they would have ~10 million in cap space to make a trade.

got it, so to get player X for a pick, we'd also be giving up the right to sign Bass, J. Green, etc. and we'd be capped out with a good number of positions left to fill

one more question - can Jeff Green be signed and traded?  I see it said a lot that the new CBA says that he can't but I don't know what the reason is exactly

something to do with us waiving our Bird Rights I think?

thanks

I'm going by what Larry Coon says, because the new CBA isn't online yet.  According to him, teams are barred from sign-and-trading players who weren't on their roster at the end of last season.

This prevents situation like the sign and trade of Keith Van Horn, who had been retired for a couple of years when he was included in the Jason Kidd deal.  However, it would also seemingly bar us from sign-and-trading Jeff Green or Nenad Krstic.

We still have Bird rights to both Green and Krstic, though.
