Post play isnt over rater it's under developed. Having someone on your team that scores at a high percentage in the post causes double teams and open shots for others. But there are few post scorers in the league right now.

What team wouldn't be better with a Kevin McHale or Barkley or a Hakeem on their team.

Problem is they don't hype post play nearly as much as they should so few people work on it.

 Post play is under valued.

I think we owe it to this thread - during a run where we are watching KG become one of the most dominant big men in recent memory - to squash the theory that post-play is overrated.

KG is unstoppable right now, especially down low.  Philly is mauling him on the block (just watch how Brand lays elbows into KG's upper back.)  He is still torching them.

KG is playing better than he ever has as a Celtic, I think.  Who would have thunk?

Too many big men don't want to be big men before the get to the NBA.

Too many big men spent more time shooting jumpers then they did learning how to dominate down low.

It is not lack of talented big men, it is the lack of big men with classic big man skills.

Also the allowance for zone principaled defense has helped make post play much more difficult in this era. Meanwhile players are still allowed to guard physically in the post (see Elton Brand club KG for not a call till he actually grabs jersey). This isn't true on the perimeter anymore.

I have to speculate that a big contributing factor to this is the prevalence of the 3 at the college level nowadays.  Can't really blame them for the style of the league, they just want to get their playing time.  It's a 1 in 4 out system that almost every team in the country uses exclusively, guys have learned to either adapt or watch their team play small ball.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale
