You don't pay $12 million/year for a third banana in the NBA. Kills your cap flexibility.

Miami paid their third option $15m
Dallas' title team had their third and fourth option making slightly south of $11m
The Lakers title teams paid their third option $12m
The 2008 Cs paid their third option $16m

In today's NBA, rosters are payrolls are laden with "Big 3s" across the league.

Look at who those third guys were; established, proven types.

For Batum, though? I think it's nuts.  That team wasn't a contender to begin with and this move isn't going to get them much closer.

  • Ashy To Classy, baby.
Idk, I'm a pessimist, but I think Batum's about ready to turn some heads. Him, K-Love, Rubio, along with Brandon Roy, the walking ACL. That's solid.
My pic is now, and will be Fab Melo until he posts his first official NBA dbl-dbl. This may be permanent.

Kahn goes in cycles.

First he collected PGs.

Then he collected PFs

Now, it is time to collect SFs.

Just because people here don't watch blazer games doesn't mean Batum is not established.  He put up 14p, 4.6r, 1.4a, 1s, 1b in 30 min. He shot 45/39/84 playing with Felton.  36 min with Rubio, he will kill.

He is a very good player, just not worth what he is getting offered.

Paying a large premium for potential. Very risky.
Makes him untradable, too. Nobody would take him off your hands if he doesn't work out so you're stuck with him for better or worse.
