What I am saying is if the Celtics ever want to become a championship team again, they either need a repeat of the KG trade from 2007 (aka a franchise player) or they need a franchise draft pick.

But a trade is an option. Ainge demonstrated that it's possible to turn young draftees and future picks into the necessary pieces for a championship.

I don't believe drafting a franchise player is the only chance at a championship.

Of course trades are always an option. But wouldn't it have made more sense for Danny to make a trade yesterday now that the Celts have at least some assets? (Ray and KG's expiring contract, etc.) Next year you only have Rondo and Pierce as your main pieces under contract and Pierce will be one year older. What will the Celts have to trade?

You can package any number of JJJ, Bradley (who apparently is garnering interest by other GMs), the two incoming rookies, and future draft picks for a superstar, using cap space.

I think people have forgotten why expiring contract's are considered valuable in the first place.  Team's trade for expirings to try and get out from burdensome salary committments, which means the team sending out the expiring is willing to take back big contracts.  That's it.  They're really not good for anything else.

Unless your a team with two huge expirings and TWO first round picks. I think that's what you're forgetting here.

But again, it's only for teams looking to get rid of a high contract player, which means either big mistakes or great players on sucky teams that are over the salary cap and throwing in the towel.  Who out there was available for Ray, JO and the two firsts?  Okafor?  Gerald Wallace?  Who?

no thanks to g wallace, okafor, etc. I'd rather have the combination of watching our core take one last stand, AND keep 2 1st rounders in a loaded draft.
