Overall, I think this trade isn't amazing for anyone involved, but each team could say they got something worthwhile out of it without really feeling like any one team took complete advantage of any other. I think that's a sign of a solid trade, if not an excellent one.

Or just sign of a bad but balanced trade. A trade with something for everybody to dislike.

I disagree though: I doubt Minny will take Artest's presence in the locker room + his salary (there's a trade kicker in his contract, by the way) + weaken their bench this season for a late first round pick.

I doubt Cleveland is willing to give up Sessions for a late first rounder. Those picks have little to no value. They can get more for Sessions; if not, they're better of by simply keeping him as their backup.

And Washington can dump Blatche in a straight salary dump for expiring contracts. Or close to it. They won't need to take back those contracts to get rid of him.

a) there have been reports that Cleveland is willing to give up Sessions for a first round pick.  I think a late first is probably the best they could get for him.

b) Washington can't just get rid of Blatche in a salary dump.  Read the story on the front page -- they've been trying to dump him and haven't found any takers.  Best they can probably hope for is to take back some good-character players on bad -- but not as bad -- contracts.

a) I doubt that they can't get a better offer than a late first rounder.

b) My point is that even if they can't get rid of him in a straight salary dump, they won't be taking so many salary back. They can simply amnesty him during the next off-season. The only reason to trade him in a salary dump instead of amnestying is to save money - but your deal doesn't achieve that, quite the opposite (and puts more salary in their books). Why would they do that deal instead of an amnesty as the last resort? I think they'll find something close to a salary dump anyway.

It's probably just me but I think with both deals the C's come out losing in terms of talent.  I don't see the team as truly better with Pau instead of Rondo.

As for Sessions, I wouldn't flip Dooling and a 1st rounder for him.  Maybe Dooling and Cle 2nd rounder we have in 2013.  Sessions would be a nice backup for Rondo but I'm not keen on him as the starting PG for a championship team.

the amnesty is a good point.  the deal could work without sending Walton to the Wizards (and Roger Mason staying in Washington).  one of the other teams involved could also kick in a pick to the Wizards if necessary.

I think Blake and Milicic is probably a great return for the Wizards for a guy like Blatche.

Well, I think the Pau vs. Rondo question is what's central to this.  Obviously the Celtics dont' consider it unless they think they're better with Gasol than with Rondo.  I would tend to think they are, though even so I think it's fair to question if they'd really be contenders with Gasol as their best player.
