but if he's restricted this summer and some team gives him a long term deal then Denver could match it and he's stuck in Denver, right? And if no team gives him a deal then Denver could/would just offer the same long term deal again? Then he'd never get to UFA?

I think Denver has to offer him another qualifying offer to maintain him as a restricted free agent.  So, Chandler would have a chance to accept a one-year contract.

Exactly.  They have to extend a new QO offer each season.  And each season, he has a limited window to accept it.

Chandler made his bed when he decided to go to China.  He didn't want to wait out the lockout, and that was his prerogative.  I am sure he assumed the season would be cancelled, and he thought it was a brilliant move.  Unfortunately for him, he was wrong, and he ended up losing out on his opportunity to be an unrestricted free agent in 2012.

It occurs to me that some of you may not be aware that an offer sheet for a restricted free agent has to have at least two years.

exactly.  if Chandler wants to play this season, he has to sign a multi-year deal.  he doesn't want to do that.  he wants to be a free agent this summer.
