Pierce's deal for 2013-14 season is a player option anyway.

I have never seen it described as a player option.  I have seen it described as a partially guaranteed fourth year that becomes fully guaranteed if he is not waived before a certain date.

I usually refer to Shamsports about contract details, and you are  right. Pierce's contract becomes fully guaranteed if he hasn't been waived before the end of the 2012-13 season (June 30th 2013).

And why not, if Pierce thinks it's a fair deal. But it's pretty far into the future, when you look at what could happen with the team inbetween.

Paul would probably take less, if it allowed us to grab D-Will and Howard. I don't see him making that concession for Paul Milsap or another middling player.

To refer to Milsap as middling is ridiculous. He has a 23.2 PER for for ****.

What I meant by middling is that hes not a MAX player. The only way it would make sense to cut Pierce is if we're trying to add a second max contract to the roster. He never said the guy was bad but giving that type of contract to an undersized PF is extremely risky. Otherwise we would have the money to pay someone of his skill set without cutting Pierce anyways.

A worthy second max contract would make obvious sense, but I think there are other scenarios in place of an aging Pierce and his big contract that may make sense as well.

It's not that far into the future.  It's less far into the future than deciding whether or not a player is worth offering a third or fourth year on a contract.

The time to waive Pierce is more than a year away, and we have only one player with a guaranteed contract for 2013-2014. A lot of things will change with this team, before the decision will be made.

It makes about as much sense to be thinking about your cap space in the summer of 2013 as it did to be thinking about your cap space in the summer of 2012 at this time last season.

Were we already wondering about Dwight Howard back then even though it was more than a year away from him possibly being a free agent?

I just read that Pierce's deal in 2013-2014 is only partially guarenteed if waived at the end of next season. I see how the rebuild process is taking place. Danny keeping most of his cap flexibility available through the next 3 to 5 years and keeping all the options open. If all the major FAs sign elsewhere (and I presume this will be the case), then he will probably pick up cap fillers and draft picks and accumulating assets that way. Of course, the premium will be on drafting and making good trades rather than FA acquisitions. Of course, there will be 25 other teams trying to play the same game as Danny Ainge. So as in reading Elrod's article in Real GM in "The Art of the Managed Blow Up", there is no guarentee for success.

I don't think they will amnesty Paul Pierce. If they do, according to LM Coons CBA Q and A, Paul is not eligible to return to the Celtics until his contract expires and the Celtics are on the hook for his salary (but off the books as far as a cap burden is concerned) less than what he earns playing somewhere else (for instance Veterans minimum for the Lakers).
The beatings will continue until morale improves
