I read that Chris Mullin said something like ”you can always trade talent”, and that's why he stacked players, that maybe didn't fit the team, but would help make those trades that eventually got the Warriors to the playoffs again. Maybe his track record isn't that impressive, but he's got a point. And that was also what Ainge did before the 2007 trades for KG and Allen.

And what do we have on the Celtics roster that is tradeable? Expiring contracts, a veteran future HOF small forward, some younger players with unknown ceiling who have yet to prove themselves and an All Star pg entering his prime.

Of all these the only commodity that – right now – could be packaged to bring us a franchise player is Rondo. So anything less for him should be a no-go. Not even picks (unless it's top five), because we probably will be entering lottery ourselves from next season, and Rondo will still be very tradeable in one or two years, meaning that we will be able to put together a better package for a superstar trade, if we keep him. And if we are able to acquire one or two stars through free agency, we don't even need to trade Rondo (unless Deron Williams is one of our acquisitions).

Should we build with or without Rondo? Well that depends on what talent is available to us. I would love to keep him, and see him take his game to the next level as a scorer and with an athletic, running team.

However, Danny should (and will) listen to any offers that can get us a (potential) top ten player. But those offers don't come often, so I would be surprised to see him go. And I would be sorry to see him go for players like Pau Gasol, Big Al aso. They are a big upgrade over JO, but they will not make us top contenders (unless Pau suddenly becomes a top ten player again), and from next year they are most likely just big contracts without much upside.

I don't want to trade Rondo.
BUT......decent "BIG"s who can run the floor , rebound and score are scarce.

Unless we tank on purpose , lose enough games to get a decent draft pick  , then  trading Rondo for a big is about all we got.

I think we would be more likey to draft a decent replacement or trade for another guard easier than trying to "LUCK" into a BIG center draft pick, nobody seesm to wants to drop to the bottom .

I becomming more inclined to trade Rondo for Pau everyday , then get another guard to go with him.

I just don't see ALSTAR BIGS, wanting to play at Boston.

I like Pau a lot, but the problem is that, IF he is on the decline - as his numbers suggest (although that might be system issues under Mike Brown) - we will be stuck as also-rans with him for two more years at 19M $ and no real room to improve our team with players at all star level.

  • You say when......
No way I would trade Rondo.....need to get BASS to rebound more, and or then get another guy like that, or like Anderson Varajo......it is good enough to just GET the ORB, then pass it out and get the reset..If Bass doesn't get back to rebounding, he is worthless......but from what i have seen and heard, it is Doc's mentality that made him stop rebounding....Doc doesn't play rebounders. Green was perfect for Rondo as a helper.....

everybody in the team is highly tradeable as long as it improves its present circumstances, at least, that's what management believes..i say our team now can compete if they are all on the same page and rediscover the concept of ubuntu once more..we are too talented to tank and put ourselves down the pits for what? for higher draft picks? c'mon? the time is now, all we need is a little tweak in perspectives..
"talent is not enough - I always admired the ones with heart..."

Not even talking about this season :) I'm looking at the longer perspective, and my point is: Even if we go for the blow-up-and-rebuild, Rondo is still very tradeable in two years, which none of the big 3 are, and we don't really know whether any of the young guys are, and whether Green gets 100 percent healthy (or even is a Celtic). And that's why I would never start the process by trading Rondo, unless we get a superstar.

If we need to trade Rondo at some time, so be it, but not for the sake of "blowing it up".

Trading rondo(and likely other players) for a 30plus power forward on the decline with a 20million salary would be a horrible trade...

The op is correct. You are better off holding onto rondo and seeing if he can be a building block..allstar pgs don't grow on trees and even a top 5 pick doesnt guarantee that player is going to be allstat calibar.

Imo danny isn't trading rondo unless its for a franchise sort of player...why have to look for 3 cornerstones when you only need to go out and look for 2
