This team is devoid of storylines right now.

For me there are lots of compelling storylines on this team.  They aren't necessarily the ones that the mass media considers to be sexy, but I'm very interested to see how they play out.

storylines:

are these guys done?  will garnett retire after this season?  will rajon rondo ever be able to hit free throws?  will the celtics make the playoffs?

etc.

there are storylines, they just aren't ones that i have much interest in following.

I wasn't speaking for you, but thanks for your input.  Yes, as a big fan of this team, I find all of the stories that you mentioned compelling.

I guess it depends what you think the answers to these questions are.

i wouldn't presume to speak for you, or anyone else, either -- if those storylines are compelling to you, then that's great.  in some ways, i envy you.

i just can't get excited about that when the driving storylines for the past few years have been "how far will this team go in the playoffs?  will they win a championship? how historically great is this team?" etc.

I still think they have a chance to add to their legacy.  A title is probably a real long shot, but an exciting upset or two in the playoffs, would help their legacy, at least, it would with me.

I know that's probably a long shot as well, but that's sort of what being a sports fan is all about sometimes.

i'd certainly call defeating a top seed (especially the Miami Heat) in the playoffs a worthy end to the run of the Big 3.

Thanks to the OP for his comments and well written thoughts, they reflect my feelings on the situation as well.

We are a drift on a sea of Mediocrity, with no short term way out.

About the best path I feel is hold the course this with what we have ( and be bored) till the end of the season, if we make the playoff great , if not....major team changes have to happen anyway. With a good draft crop , maybe we can grab some prize talent .

Just gotta suck it up and hang on to the puke bucket another 50 games or so. ;D

We can do this.....with the help of some beer  ;D

On Rondo:  Yes, I think he's at his peak or near it.  He's about to be 26 years old.  I love the guy.  I do love watching him play.  But he's not going to evolve into Chris Paul no more than 26 year old Chris Paul is going to evolve into 27 year old LeBron James.

On Garbage:  Sorry if anyone was offended with me calling our scrubs "Garbage".  What I mean to say is, if you take a look at a random "bad" team like Phoenix and look at the talent that makes up their bench (Sebastian Telfair, Robin Lopez, Ronnie Price) you'd probably call those guys "scrubs".  Our entire bench is made up of "scrubs".  That's great if you have high hopes for Pietrus.  This is his 9th season... We know what he can and can't do.  You are already saw it in his first two games.

On Storylines:  What I mean to say is, there may be overriding storylines that compel you to follow this team...  "Is KG washed up?" ... "Is Pierce washed up?"...  That's not what I was talking about.  I'm talking about tuning in last year to see whether or not Jeff Green was going to develop into a 20 point scorer and suddenly "click" with Rondo in the running game.  Personally, I either tune in to see our "contender" try to beat another "contender"... or I'm tuning in to watch whether our young guys can develop into players that can turn us into a contender.  This year we are clearly not a contender... and there isn't a single young prospect worth following on this team who will reasonably develop into a substantial player.  SUre, you'll see random delusional threads throughout this year about Avery Bradley, E'Twaun Moore, Stiemsma, and JaJuan Johnson in the same way you'd see delusional threads about Tyler Honeycutt if he was playing for the Celtics... but none of those scrubs are likely to turn into anything substantial.  There isn't a Derrick Favors or Enes Kanter on this team.  We don't have a single serious prospect on the Celtics.

I'll be tuning in for the playoffs (if we even make the playoffs), grasping to that same irrational hope (kinda like how Knicks fans tuned in last year on the irrational hope that Amare and Melo could miraculously push them to a title).  I'd be nuts not to watch the Celtics in the playoffs.  My overall point of this thread is... we are a sitting duck team and I can't remember a time I've been this bored watching this team during the regular season.

Thanks for you completely subjective opinion on whether or not the story lines on this team are worth following.

I wonder what your definition of a substantial player is.  I agree with you that we have no one under 25 who is likely to turn into a top 25 player, but we do have some guys who may be able to turn into solid pros who could help out the right team.

Personally, I feel like there are many intriquing individual stories on this team. For me the most notable ones are Rondo and Pierce.  I don't need to re-hash those stories as everyone's followed them.

Even more than the individual stories, I find the overall team story fascinating.  The fact that this team has essentially been written off by many, including a large faction among their own fan base, puts them in an underdog status right now.  I like rooting for an underdog and a long shot.

Sure, we could put a fork in them after a lackluster first ten games, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the plot to take a twist at some point during the season where these guys start to look more like grizzled, old warriors than washed up has beens.

I don't fault you for having no interest in that story, but it's keeping me glued to this current version of the Boston Celtics.

Sure Celtics18... I'm glad you are enjoying them.  You never know... maybe Keyon Dooling suddenly finds his stride in year 11 on his 6th team.  There's always hope.  Maybe Jermaine O'Neal ages backwards 6 years.  Maybe a mid-season signing of 35 year old Antoine Walker is all this team needs (he's a few months younger than KG).

I don't think any of those things are needed or likely to happen.  I do thing there are other things like Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett playing close to at the levels that they played last year or Rondo continuing to blossom into a star player in this league that are much more likely to occur and will help the team look better if they do.

Sorry you are bored with the team, though.

Even if KG, Ray and Pierce were at full strength... I still don't think this team is deep enough to make any serious noise.
