if both Howard and Williams make it to free agency.
Right now our only real trade-able assets are Rajon Rondo, the clippers 1rst rounder and our first rounder. Let's say the season plays out, the Magic stay in contention and try to make one last push to keep Howard in Orlando. Essentially, Otis Smith screws up.
Both Howard and Williams are free agents, and the Celtics situation is as follows:
- Brandon Bass declines his player option and enters free agency.
- Kevin Garnett opts to retire at the end of the season
- The Celtics finish as a 7th Seed and the Clippers finish as a Five Seed. Giving Boston the 18th and the 21st picks in the draft.
This scenario is pretty simple. We trade up into the draft with Rondo and draft picks, clearing cap space to sign both Howard and Williams.
I like Andre Drummond out of UCONN. We could trade up into the top 5 and draft Drummond. Sign Howard and Williams with enough cap space left to resign Ray Allen to a home town deal (6 mill?).
The status on Jeff Green is unknown obviously due to the circumstances that unfolded. But i have a gut feeling her return for a cheep one year contract. I'm going to put him in to the projected roster. But I admit, it's not certain he'll be there.
Our 12/13 line-up could look like this:
Williams/Dooling
Allen/Bradley/Moore
Pierce/Green
Drummond/3J
Howard/Stiemsma
And that's the basic shell of what it could be. We'd probably be able to make a free valuable minimum pickups, maybe we'd be able to bring back Pietrus, Daniels, Bass or Wilcox under the cap or for minimum deals too. We'd also have a second rounder to play with.
Also, I feel like we'd be able to make a bit more return on Rondo + Picks then just the selection of Drummond. But this is the shell of an idea that probably will be explored if Howard makes it to free agency.
Obligatory Rondo's My Favorite Player Section: Rondo is amazing. I think he's probably (slightly) a better point guard then Deron Williams, and I think trading Rondo for Williams makes little sense at all. The most far-fetched aspects of this scenario are:
A. Dwight Howard making it to free agency.
B. See aspect A
Also I don't think Deron Williams alone sways Howard to come to Boston any more than Rondo in Boston would. But this scenario is better than trading for Paul because:
1. We get return for Rondo, plus an all-star point guard.
2. We have control over the situation. If we made this deal we'd know who we'd be drafting, if howard/williams would be free agents and the general market that is out there for Dwight and Deron.
