  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
What has Wyc done to join the 'Hawks' group of owners?
I know he's friends with Dan Gilbert but has he ever done anything asserting he a true 'profits first' kind of owner?
I'm just uninformed about the overall stance that Wyc takes towards owning the team. He seems like he's happy to spend money so I'm a little confused.
Read this article on NBC and read similar on a few places.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I don't think Wyc is a "profits first" type of owners (and I honestly don't think many of them are), however, he is a guy who has been willing to go above and beyond to put a good product on the floor, while not having the revenue stream that some other owners have.  So, he has seen first hand that, even in a bigger market, the current system can make it tough to consistently field a winner, while still making a profit.

Since this is still a business, it makes sense why he would be one of the owners who is pushing for a new system, that will allow those, who might have slightly smaller revenue streams, to compete on an even playing field, and still make a profit.

It was said that Wyc was impressed with the deal the NHL owners received and wanted a more owners-friendly deal for the NBA + that he was willing to lose a season to get it.

I also remember something along these lines ... that he was willing to pay what was necessary (a high payroll) to field a Championship Contender but was unhappy with how much money the team was making. That they should have been making a larger sum of money in profit.

Wyc's problem is that the Celtics are over-leveraged. It's not easy to keep a company with a debt-to-equity ratio close to 50% afloat.

That's also why I think he's one of the easiest to move from hawk to dove. Especially in the current context it won't be easy to renegotiate the debt service and he need the cash-flow from the season to keep the survival line to the banks open.

subtle message about what the owners are trying to do to the players in negotiations?

Also, Wyc is one of the newer owners (bought in the last decade or so) who was promised profitable conditions, and things haven't quite lived up to that promise so far.  In that sense, he hasn't yet seen the kind of return on his investment that he was looking for.

That's what I've read as an explanation, in any case.

Also keep in mind, although Wyc is the face of the ownership group for the Celtics, he is not the sole owner.  He is merely the one representing the other investors, so I'm sure some of his decisions are influenced by others decisions as well.

Good point.  Although Wyc is the owner who has been present at the meeting, but it is the ownership group on the whole that makes the calls.
