In what is seemingly a preemptive strike, Syracuse and Pittsburgh have reached out to the ACC about joining the conference.

Edit: It appears that they have already applied for membership.

I kinda hope BC just drops out of the A.C.C.  There's no way they'll ever compete with these other schools in basketball, and recently they've had trouble against them in football, too.

Also of note, Baylor and Iowa State have approached the Big East about membership should the Big 12 fall apart.

And what about basketball in all of this?  Some people care about NCAA Basketball too and not just NCAA Football.

It'd be a shame seeing Pitt and Syracuse move to the ACC.

I'm a Cuse fan and I would hate to see them leave the Big East.  I'd prefer the ACC as destination over the Big Ten, which they were rumored to be flirting with a couple years back, though.

What's really troublesome is it looks like we're heading for 4 super-conferences, with the Big 12 and Big East the odd men out.  What a mess that will be for scheduling and competitiveness.  Especially since it's football $ that's driving this mess and they'll barely be able to play half their own conference in a season.  Ugh.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse are only applying to the ACC because the Big Ten doesn't want them.

Money.

College football is the 2nd biggest sport in the this country after the NFL.  That is where the most money can be made by these schools.

Last thing BC needs to do is drop from the ACC.  There are only so many teams in the super conferences.  Being in one will help recruiting.

Yup it's all about money... unfortunately.  College athletics all together IMO have become all about money and I don't think that's the way it should be.

And along the lines with College Football being the 2nd most popular sport in the country now, that is a shame too because I believe it's become too popular for it's own good.

The last NCAA report (2010) showed that only 22 athletic programs were profitable.  Given the state of the economy can you really blame a college for trying to maximize its revinue so that it can hopefully become profitable itself.

Meh.

Boston University made the NCAA tournament last year because it was in a crappy conference.  BC, meanwhile, faded towards the end of the year because it couldn't maintain a good record against stiff competition.

BC just isn't on the same level as the majority of the other ACC teams in football or basketball (Clemson, Wake, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Duke, North Carolina, etc).

Which program made more athletic money last season, though, BC or BU?

BC does quite well for itself in the ACC.  It was the 27th most profitable program in the country, clearing $13 million.

I'm not disputing that.

I'm just saying I don't care.  As a BC fan and former undergrad, I don't see any of that money.  I just have to watch the crappy teams get beaten around by higher caliber opponents every year.

BC needs to step up it's recruiting.

The problem of course is the academic standards it holds it athletes to.  That kills many teams ability to compete.

But BC is where a lot of college programs wish they could be right now.  Inside one of the possible super conferences.
