Eh, I don't see the need to ridicule Kahn for this.  Last summer, Kahn was just trying his best to say something stern yet supportive of Beasley, to send the right message to him through the media.  Kahn has done plenty of eyebrow-raising things, but this is a non-story to me.

As for Beasley's eyes, they aren't much different from Marquis's eyes, and from what I recall most people around here loved the guy.

Saying that a player used to smoke too much pot is supportive??? No GM ever needs to let the public know that his player has admitted to smoking too much pot. He threw Beasley under the bus there and now has brought more attention to this incident because of that comment last summer.

As I said, he was sending a mixed message to Beasley --

1. The organization is aware of his past off-court issues with pot etc. and isn't going to ignore the issue or be overly nice about it (e.g. they'll openly mention it in interviews)

2. The organization supports him and is behind him; they believe he will improve his behavior and not get into further trouble.

Did he have past off-court issues that were pot related?  Without going to google to search for one, not a single one comes to my mind.  THAT's why I don't find it was supportive of Kahn to say it last summer.  It was bringing attention to Beasley partaking in an illegal activity (him smoking pot) that he has never got in trouble for.  So, I just looked up online.  There was the internet picture of him with the bag in the background which I was aware of, but he never got in any kind of trouble for.  And there was an incident in 2008 with Darrel Arthur and Mario Chalmers, and Beasley's name was eventually removed from the report.  I had never heard of the incident.

If it were Zach Randolph's coach, I'd think it be an OK comment, because he had, in fact, been arrested for related incidents.  If it were T-Mac's coach, I'd think it was rude, because it was never definite knowledge, just assumed.  I think that's the case with Beasley also since he's never been in trouble for his usage.

Beasley posted a picture of himself on twitter with what most people believe was bags of weed in the background (see link below).  When the story blew up he took down his twitter account and checked himself into rehab.

It is also pretty common knowledge that Beasley smoked a lot of weed in Miami.  It is one of the main reasons they moved him as it was really affecting his game in a negative manner.

i don't really read anything into this besides the fact that Beasley has a bad combination of bad luck and no foresight.

getting pulled over doing 84 on a highway really sucks.  I'd be p---ed if that happened to me, but if you're driving around at 3am you need to do one of two things - either slow your butt down or stash your stash somewhere in the trunk before you hop in the car. Or ideally both if you MUST have that bag.

Say what you will about smoking weed, but josh howard already came out and said the vast majority of players in the league blaze up.  It's not a secret.  It's just that Beasley tends to get caught more often.

With the strike on, are league policies re: drugs/conduct still enforceable?

No, they are not ... a report from Ira Winderman

Quote
An NBA spokesman confirmed Wednesday to the Sun Sentinel what logic would have dictated anyway: In the void of an NBA collective-bargaining agreement, there is no substance-abuse policy currently in place. None. 'The anti-drug agreement -- including testing and penalties -- is not in effect during the lockout,' league spokesman Tim Frank said in an email.

Ok, what are supposed to be mad at Beasely for here?   I'm mad at him for possibly driving under the influence, but I could care less about him using marijuana.   How can anyone continue to justify anti-marijuana laws?

Beasley needs to demand a trade to a state that has lighter Marijuana laws. If he played for Denver, Golden State, Sacto or one of the LA teams he could get a prescription from a Dr. and get it legally.

If he had a doctors note, could he be suspended for using it? I feel like it's similar to ADD medication in that if a team is notified of it beforehand it is allowed, otherwise it is a banned substance.

If Beasley was here in Boston he would have been given a $250 ticket. $150 for the speeding and $100 for the weed.

Big deal. So what.

Yea, I don't care much. Not the smartest thing to be going 20 mph over the speed limit with 16 grams of weed in your car, though. So he's dumb and a pothead...2 things I already knew.

Or he just doesn't care either.  I'm sure he has less than an ounce on him 90% of the time he gets in his car.  If he's typically a fast driver then the chances of him getting pulled over and searched aren't big enough for him to want to drive under the speed limit every time he's holding.

And even for that .01% of the time that he does get caught, the ticket doesn't even put a dent in his income.  It has much more to do with the chance of being caught + the consequences than his intelligence.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

about as much of a non-issue as could possibly be.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to people that athletes smoke weed in the off-season

Haha. Most of my 5pm time on the highway is spent considerably *below* the speed limit.

The ticket isn't a big deal to him, the PR hit and any consequences from the league should be important though.
