that is the question listening to danny's interveiw on WEEI this morning he said the toughest challenge this offseason will be how to make this team a contender & put the neccesary pieces around the big 4 & still maintain the 2012 cap that danny will have to start fresh that summer

i feel there is no other way around it its one or the other

danny said they big 3(4) has one year left in the window so that says to me he will just add a whole bunch of defensive minded vet min guys this offseason

but when there are guys like andre igudala,al jefferson & paul millsap also josh smith & jamal crawford who obviously would have to shatter the 2012 cap to aquire 1 of these guys let alone 2

so what do you guys think? shoul danny go 4 the title this year & suffer for the next few years or the years after that like the lakers & mavs will (see thier payroll yIKES) or have the 2012 with hopes(key word hopes)of signing the one & only dwight howard who i feel if he wsnt testing the free agent market danny wouldve been pulled the trigger on alot of deals to stack this team

thanks alot & thoughts are appreciated

I think Danny was pretty clear that they are trying to juggle both.  He said their goal was definitely to get under the cap, and that it better be a pretty good player if they were going to bend on that.

That makes perfect sense to me.  You don't go from a strategy that has you a contender this year and, say, three out of the next five years to trying to gild the lily of that contendership this year at the cost of the next five years in the ditch.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
I think Danny's already decided the caps more important. He will do all that he can to give the big 4 support as long as it doesn't kill the teams future hopes. Danny probably sees the writing on the wall for this team, but the best he can do is wait it out. My theory is that Danny knows this team is done and is keeping it together for ownership to collect the cash off the tickets that a winning team sells. Another theory I have is that if we don't look up to task for a strong convincing run before the deadline he may just blow the team up with a huge blockbuster trade.

I think based on '10 we can't possible judge any potential playoff runs by how they play in the regular season.

But I agree with everything else you say
2020 CelticsStrong All-2000s Draft -- Utah Jazz

Right now, Danny's just talking. He's saying things that he thinks *we* want to here.

He won't know exactly how to proceed until after the new CBA is signed and the next season is scheduled. Until then he won't really know , max contract values or length, about amnesty or franchise tags (if they exist), and the cap situation (hard, soft, exceptions).

If there is NO season this year, then KG's and Ray's contracts are done, any possible signings prior to 2012's free agency are moot, and everything Danny says is just "whistling in the dark."

If there is SHORT season this year, then a lot is going to depend on the schedule of games. If the league tries to squeeze in as many as possible, then a team like the Celtics is in trouble. If the timing is normal and the number of games is lower then the Celtics might have an advantage. How Danny proceeds will depend on how he sees scenarios like that playing out.

Finally, if the CBA gets settled sooner (unlikely IMO), Danny will have to process the changes and decide on how the Celtics proceed from there. I think what he's telling us now is how he thinks he might proceed...if everything stays the same, or close to it, with the contract and schedule. I don't that will be the case, so I'm not paying a lot of attention to what Danny says right now.

I agree with erisred that it ALL depends on the cap. There is a decent possibility that we will be able to have cap space in 2012 and add a decent piece to what we already have. Also depends on Jeff Green, his agent, and other contracts teams will want to give him. I'm sure they love the early talks of Jeff starting for us, and that might convince Jeff to stick around on the QO and raise his value.
