Not sure, but I don't like the way sports get when front office guys need players approval to do things. :-\

Spears from Yahoo sports today on the Sportshub laughed at this story and said there is no way they pre-approved the trade.

I think Spears stopped laughing when Marc Stein called him out on Murphy going to Miami!!

I like it when they're informed in the process. Team chemistry and morale is important on any team.

Agreed. This is just spin or whatever. No players pre-approve this type of deals.

Yeah definitely spin.  ::)

Doc surely just wants to alienate his players by going on the radio and telling the world and their friend that they signed off on the trade. Exactly what happened.

Doc is a pretty honest guy about this stuff, so I believe him that several players were talked to about the deal before it went down.

Now, I don't think there was any "approval" going on here (its not their call), but I think they were made aware, and given the chance to share their opinions.

Doc said, it was like losing a family member at first, and obviously it hurt them all.  But I also think they completely understood it.

Let's put the full quote here to give it more context:

“I think they do [understand the deal],” Rivers said. ”I think our guys knew that from the beginning. Listen, everyone was upset. But we talked to our players — at least three or four of them — before we made that deal. And they all thought it was a good move, but they all knew it would hurt if we did it. And it did.”

Well, the part that sounds like "approval" is that they "all thought it was a good move".  That's the part that surprised me, both to hear that the players felt that way, and that Doc would share that.

Do you think Red called in Bird, McHale, and Parish before trading Ainge?

Does it matter if they did?
Its the players job to play. Its Docs job to coach the players we have. Its Ainges job to decide who to sign who to trade.

I am happy we have a owner who recognizes how special Danny is as a GM.

Everyone already knew Ainge was on the trading block.

With trading Perkins, I think the players didn't have veto power, but their opinion was respected so that it counted for something.  Some of them are capable of saying, "We don't want to do it, but it's a good idea."  They're not going to suck their thumbs and insist on hanging to Perk like a security blanket.  And if someone who can say that instead says that it's a horrible idea, then you have to listen to that person.  But the vets probably said that it fills the team's most pressing need and that it won't kill the defense or kill team chemistry.

Yeah, Doc also described it as "marrying off a family member".  Painful, but ultimately something everyone knew was for the best of everyone involved.

And I am not surprised that the players (he didn't say it was everyone on the team, my guess is they only talked with a couple of them) thought it was a good move.  These guys understand the business, and can look past the emotions.  I also think Perkins might have frustrated some of them at times with his play, even though they loved what he brought to the table.
