There are a lot of different reasons behind Celtics fans disapproval of this trade. A contending team was viewed by many critics to have taken a step back yesterday when an important piece - a defensive anchor, not just a specialist - was traded. Some argue that if Perkins had remained healthy for game 7, the Celtics would have won the title last year. That will always be a topic of a speculation, for there is no reasonable way of knowing that.
But the #1 reason to be saddened by this trade is the length of time Perkins stayed here. Actually, not just the length of time - the nature of the time period during which Perkins held a roster spot on the Celtics. He came here in 2003 after having been drafted by the Grizzlies and traded that night with Marcus Banks. That day commenced the tough rebuilding process the Celtics endured for four years. Walker was shipped out a few months later for the first time (and would later be re-acquired and shipped out again a second time). Pierce was mainly unhappy. An influx of young players became Celtics - some of whom Perk was great friends with and presumably still is in touch with today - like the well documented friendship he had with Big Al.
Those were the first four years. The next four years were defined by winning. And, Perkins also got the media attention and recognition he deserved for the impact he had nightly on his teams winning ways. It was this positive reputation that had teams interested in his services, ultimately leading to a trade for a younger, more athletic and more promising player on the offensive end. This description doesn't make my heart swell with joy though.... because I have no way of knowing as of yet if he will fill into the big shoes Perk left, to basically match the amount of devotion and pride to the Celtics as well as loyalty.
So in recap, it makes me feel sad that a player so loyal and so focused during the worst of times (and the best), one who had seen it all following the Pierce/Walker era, was traded in the manner he was. It just seemed like he was destined to be here for much longer, perhaps another 4-5 years. The guy is only 26 mind you! I understand that the NBA is a business in which every player should not feel complacent regarding their availability, because as loyal as you may be to your team, you could be traded at the drop of a hat. But Perkins didn't just spend 8 years here - he was present throughout the period of turbulence, instability, and chaos - and seemingly never complained about issues players habitually moan about like lack of playing time. This was a true Celtic and he deserves his dues for years to come by Celtics fans. The Big 3 will always stand in the forefront of the glory (with Rondo having emerged into that picture) but this is a glue piece that helped mold it all together. Miss you Perk..
