I think we will compete for the title this year.  But with a lockout looming will there be another run for the Big Three?  Ainge is an insider, he knows the team, our players and the league better than any of us.  So far he has not led us astray.   He has reports on the O'Neals how they are healing.   I am sure he has an idea who will get bought out.  I think he is making a run for Murphy definitely for this to make sense.  Maybe someone else as well.  He cleared two spots.  So he has two people in mind.   Murph could start here for instance with Perk gone.  KG or Murph could play C or PF respectively or vice versa.  Not ideal on defense but Murph is a better rebounds guy than Perk and better offensively.

Green is a potential building block if they like him.  As was said above we did ok without KP.  Maybe Danny thinks he is injury prone and the other injury preventing this trip was the last straw.

I hope we get some quality veterans who are bought out.  We need one with length for sure.

BTW we beat MIA several times without Perk this year.

I like this trade. I love Perk, BUT:

1. In Green, we get a 3/4 who is long, athletic and versatile: our new 6th man. Don't underestimate him and Doc loves him and while he is good now, still has upside.

2. Aside from the possibility of not signing Perk next year and probably losing him for nothing to a team like OKC who would be able to pay him a ton (and we get Green), there was absolutely no guaranty that Perk was going to be durable enough this year for us to count on him. And, unlike Green, Perk has reached his ceiling, and physically may be headed downhill.

3. Perk, while a better than average defender, was that in a large sense because of KG (not the other way around) and the defensive system we employ.

4. Kristic, while not a great individual defender, has enough mobility to play decent help defense in our system.

5. Except for the Magic and the Lakers (and I don't think they make the Finals)this makes us stronger match-up wise with the Heat, Bulls, Spurs and Mavs.

Thank you for a bit of perspective. Great points. Perk definitely looked much better cus of KG! How good was our defense without Perk all year? Best in the league if i remember correctly. People are acting like Perk's gonna join the Thunder and turn them into a defensive juggernaut. KG can have that kind of impact, not Perk. I love Perk and am so sad to see him go but he wasn't as good as we made him seem.

I love Perk and appreciate everything he has given this organization, but IMO this was a fantastic deal that doesn't decrease the chance of # 18 this year and helps bridge to the future.

I think it's clear to say that the roster will now look like this.

PG: Rondo / West / Bradley
SG: Ray   / Wafer/ Bradley
SF: PP    / Green/ Ray
PF: KG    / BBD  / Green
 C: Shaq  / Kristic / Sheed ( I have to imagine) / BBD

1) The C's still have a ton of size, especially when they sign Sheed or another buyout. Yes they are older, but they have the ability to give 18+ fouls still and throw their weight around. With BBD, Shaq, Kristic and Sheed that is still more beef and size than probably any team in the league has at Center .

2) The C's won a championship in 08' with James Posey at the PF and KG at the center position for a majority of the games. Rondo, Ray, PP, KG and Posey was the go to lineup for that team . In crunch time , it was Posey that was in the game not Perkins.

The C's have been doing the same thing with BBD this year, and now have the ability to do it with Jeff Green, this trade makes them much more versatile and able to match up with any team and style .

3) THEY GOT A FIRST ROUND PICK FROM THE CLIPPERS. You can never go wrong owning one of the clippers 1st round picks .

4) It must have been made clear that Perk was going to demand a huge salary and Danny wasn't willing to pay. Sure Perk is a great defensive low post center, but he doesn't have much of an offensive game , isn't a great rebounder, isn't in the game at crunch time ( BBD usually is) and is coming off of a major knee injury .

5) If the C's can resign Jeff Green for around 10 mil a year the C's will be at around 40 mil on the cap for 2012. If the CBA doesn't drastically change the salary cap ( around 55-58 mil) , the C's would still be in position to offer a max contract to Dwight Howard .

A roster of ...

Rondo
pp
Jeff Green

could be very enticing to Howard . That would be a super athletic and defensive team with Rondo, Green and Howard running the floor.

I hated the trade when I first heard it , but this to me could be a steal of a trade, especially if LAC give us a lottery pick.

reason #3 made me feel better.

It's hard to see players go, but the main goal is the present and future of the Celtics.

1. Shaq has played very well with the Big 4. He'll be starting when it matters, but he needs to save energy. His "brother" Jermaine will also be giving 10 good minutes in playoff time. When the playoff time begins to fall, he'll still be able to hit the charts  ;)

2. The Celtics couldn't afford to extend both Perk and Davis if they wanted to be overpaid. Danny's answer is clear, and this will help in order to resign BBD.

3. Financial flexibility is the main goal for Danny, so he's putting the Celtics in a good scenario for the summer of KG... Green's contract could be ending in 2012, like KG, Ray, and everyone else but Pierce and Rondo.

4. The pick from the Clippers could be in the 10th-15th area in 2012. Danny has done a very good job in the draft, and that pick combined with the Celtics own pick could be a good asset for trades or in the draft.

5. Health. I hope Perk can recover and be healthy and earn his big paycheck in OKC, but who knows? Could Danny offer part of the MLE to Greg Oden next summer? It would be a risky move, but less expensive.

6. The return in the trade, aside from the draft pick, is very good. Jeff Green will be the main scorer from the bench and could end playing a young Posey role, and Krstic is a great scorer. Playing under Doc (alongside KG, of course) could do wonders for their defensive game, could you picture Wafer or Nate defending so bravely?

7. Nate is gone, and I'll miss his defense, although his offense this year wasn't the best. The C's also traded Luke, Semih and Marquis. 5 players gone, and that opens 3 spots and a lot of especulation (I'm trying to read all the ideas being posted in here). I think Marquis will be bought out, and if he's healthy, he might be back in green. For the other two spots, I'd love what's been said about Dalembert signing for the C's. I don't hate Murphy, but Dalembert fits better. Then they would need a 2/3. Rip (one can dream) would be great, but Danny knows better than us

I think is a very well thought move by Danny, it's still sad to see Perk walk, but the Celtics are team-first, and they will do well this year, and in the future

I hate to say it but I think a lot of you guys are overrating Green.  The guy is only shooting 44%, which is not terrible but when you consider that he doesn't really rebound for his size and he can't pass, that's not nearly good enough.  However, one encouraging sign is that he has been much more efficient recently. http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/3209/jeff-green
