I can see Semih baiting Amare into some offensive charging calls tonight.Ive noticed lately Semih is trying to take a page out Baby's book on how to take a charge.Maybe the two could help Amare spend a lot of time on the knicks sideline.

If he can do this, I feel that his ceiling is higher than Marcin Gortat's.  This is not a knock on Gortat, who has been a very solid role player since coming into the league.
Unless he can increase his rebounding by at least 60% I don't see the potential to be a better player than Gortat.

Gortat is a starting caliber C, he's just not as good as Dwight Howard.

Is Erden a bad rebounder? Statistics may say yes right now, but I'm not so sure.  He has an injured shoulder and an injured thumb. That is going to limit his ability to rebound with two hands, severely. I think this is why you see him tapping rebounds...one handed...toward team mates a lot more than grabbing and pulling them down. If you could count the taps to his team mates as rebounds you'd increase his average by two or three a game.

I've been watching him during games and it looks like he has the tools to be a good rebounder. He knows how to block out, gets overpowered sometimes, but he clearly knows how and tries. He is better about not getting stuck to his man and going after balls outside his "zone" than quite a few centers in the league. He is still tentative, at times, and a bit slow on rotations and positioning, but I write that off to being a Rookie and someone who doesn't speak the language very well yet. He needs to improve his strength as he is too easily shoved off the blocks and backed down under the basket. He hasn't shown great leaping ability, but that's no surprise, but he has shown good mobility, willingness to run the floor, good hands under the basket, and the ability to take instruction and learn.

Erden is making a lot of Rookie mistakes, he's playing hurt, he's playing without a complete understanding of the offense and defense, without enough experience at playing with these guys to always anticipate what they are going to do, and without a good grasp of the language everyone else is speaking on the court. Personally, I think he's doing pretty [dang] well!

Oh, and he's 24...like that's old?  Come on! A four year college player enters the league at 22 or 23 and keep developing for another few years before hitting their peak. So, Semih is a year older? There is nothing to stop him from continuing to get better each year for several more years.

*shrug* maybe he has the "tools", but currently he's rebounding like Rasheed Wallace. Rebounding is usually the one skill that is very easily translated from other leagues into the NBA.

If he was healthy I'll give you that he could improve somewhat, but I don't think he'll be able to make the huge leap from extremely poor to above average that people seem to think.

He's not very strong, can't leap, and doesn't have the best hands. I don't see how he can improve anymore than Baby can improve on the boards much more....

Though he may not pull down boards, his hands have looked good catching the ball.

I think he can make the leap to average or nearly so, which is probably good enough for him to be at least an adequate back-up center.

There are some centers who have a total rebound % worse than Semih Erden this season.  They include Brook Lopez, Theo Ratliff, Joel Anthony, Ryan Hollins, Jason Collins, and Hasheem Thabeet.  A few more, such as Nenad Krstic, Timofey Mozgov, and Anthony Tolliver are within hailing distance.

I think I would prefer Erden to at least a few of those names.

I still say he's not bad for the last pick of the draft thrust into a starting role in his first two months in the NBA.

I hope that by Christmas we never see him play another meaningful minute of basketball again.  However, I wouldn't rule him out as a future contributor in 2-3 years.

I continue to stick to my guns. Semih is one of the worst if not the worst center in the NBA right now. If all of the Celts big guys were healthy he would not be on the roster. He will be a good third-string center, maybe. He doesn't rebound and has no strength. I was glad to see Doc sit him down for the last 18 minutes of the game tonight because he was terrible.

He's up and down, he had a stretch where he was almost Perk like. I'll have to watch tonight's game to see how he did early.

Yeah, he was truly atrocious tonight.  I feel like there's probably a worse center in the league on some team who simply isn't playing at all, though.

Tolliver is not a C, no matter how Rambis uses him.

A lot of those players are third string C type of guys. Those who aren't typically are better offensive players (Krstic) or defensive players (Anthony).

Well the Knicks didn't really play a C all game (Turiaf only got 9 minutes).

This was a horrible match up for Semih. He's not the sort of player who can make a team pay for going small either on the glass or by scoring over a smaller defender.

For a 4th string Center, Semih is doing an adequate job. He is overcoming a lot of barriers a Shoulder injury, being Rookie and foreigner. And He got thrust into the starting lineup of a championship team isn't easy. He does need to improve but its hard to complain with all injured bodies we have.

I think semih did as well a job as could be expected tonight. There was that one play in the 2nd quarter I believe where Amare dunked over Semih really hard and Semih just kinda turned around and let him score. At first glance it was easy to think wow, what a softy this guy is! But I think it was the smartest play he could have made. The actual superman couldnt have stopped amare from makin that dunk. Instead of getting a pointless foul on a guy that was shooting absolutely lights out. (The whole team was hitting redonkulous shots all night. I find it hard to believe thats going to happen again next time we play them.)

I dont like to make the excuse that he's the 4th guy and you shouldnt expect too much from him. We should expect a lot from him no matter what, i'm sure the guys on the team do.

I hope he keeps getting better.

Started this thread after Semih's career night.  Wonder if he'll get any minutes in Cleveland.
