Honestly, I could see the Nugs buying out Ray, who they wouldn't really want anyway for rebuilding.  Add in $3 million cash for the buyout...

...then Ray returns to Boston after a 30-day vacation?  Who doesn't do the deal now?

Ray's got another year on his deal.

Well, I think that is a player option...but I highly doubt he would waive that option to take a buyout, since he would struggle to make that money back next season.

So, basically, the Nuggets would have to buy him out by paying for most of next year...and when it came to that, I think they would prefer to keep him around to help them sell at least a couple tickets.

Not to mention with the combination of his contract and talent level, Ray would be a valuable trade piece for the Nugs.

What if they turned around and traded him to the Heat?

I'm pretty sure that Ray's at the point in his career where if he doesn't feel like going somewhere, he just stays home.

I'd also say that, after the trade rumors when he was in his expiring contract year, the player option is a bit of protection for him against being traded to a rebuilding team for a young hotshot (which is what we're talking about here).

So I don't think it's about the money for Ray right now.  I don't think he'd go to Denver, and I don't think he wants to be on any other contender except Boston.  So Danny would have to go and sit at Ray's kitchen table with Ray and his family (Mom included) and lay out the idea, and would have to get assurance from DEN that they need $3 million to buy out the rest of Ray's season this year, and assurance from Ray that, if bought out, he would come back to Boston.

With that in place, I'd say it's a risk worth taking.

I would absolutely love to have Melo on this team and would instantly sign him to an extension...

However, at the current time I would not make this deal. Our chemistry is too good, and Ray fits our system way too well. In the offseason I would think about a sign and trade, currently, even though i would want to, I wouldnt touch this deal.

Here's the thing though.  In this trade, Denver is not a rebuilding team.  They would still be pretty good, and would be another trade away from being legit.

A core of Billups, Allen, Nene, Afflalo, Smith, and Lawson is pretty nice.  And they would then have a couple extra picks to include with Kenyon to bring in a better big man to put next to Nene.  Maybe send Martin and a couple picks for Gerald Wallace and Mohammed.

Suddenly you have a contender...or at least a very good team out West.

I don't see Pierce and Melo fitting very well.  I think this team is perfect offensively as it is.  I know everyone here loves Pierce because he's been a long time Celtic, but the only way I think a trade for Melo makes sense is if Pierce is being moved.
do it

I compared his stats to PP.

Paul Pierce
Boston
Position:  Forward
Height:  6-7 Weight:  235
College: Kansas
Player file | Team stats

2010-11 Statistics
PPG 19.1
RPG 5.2
APG 3.4
SPG 1.0
BPG 0.6
FG% 0.514
FT% 0.859
3P% 0.413
MPG 35.0

 Carmelo Anthony
Denver
Position:  Forward
Height:  6-8 Weight:  230
College: Syracuse
Player file | Team stats

2010-11 Statistics
PPG 23.5
RPG 8.1
APG 2.9
SPG 1.0
BPG 0.7
FG% 0.435
FT% 0.804
3P% 0.261
MPG 34.9

PP is a better shooter.

With Perk coming back and playing so well, I think losing Big Baby isn't all that bad anymore and now I would definately make the trade I originally proposed.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner
