Because I believe he was provoked beyond the normal "fan-being-a-jerk" kind of stuff. I think a guy who's dealt with just about every nasty word a player can be called by a hostile, drunk fan, is not going to throw his gum just for the heckuvit, or because he's a little irritated by a couple of personal fouls. I could be wrong, (I very often am), but I think there's more to thsi than what's on the surface.

Whatever. A Celtic smiled and got fined 15k. Surprise surprise.   I'm amazed Stern hasn't called out a hit on Tommy yet. 

Or maybe he did and Tommy keeps eliminating them Jason Bourne style.

Gumgate?  Are The C's beat reporters in the bag for the team, covering up the grossness of the offense?

Mark Murphy at the Herald simply reports that it was for throwing an object into the stands, whereas Julian Benbow at the Globe goes out of his way to make it sound like it was what it wasn't, which is throwing his headband early:
