I just read CNN's article about this.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/SPORT/10/06/liverpool.football.boston/index.html?hpt=T2

I wouldn't consider myself a Patriots fan, however stuff like this purchase is probably the reason why so many people hate the New England Patriots -- it's actually quite amusing when New England gets a chance to show-up 'Old' England seeing as Liverpool seemed to be in a significant amount of debt before selling their team to New England Sports Ventures.

At least for now Liverpool can still claim that they are a better football club than The New England Revolution, lool.

I'm confused, what does any of this have to do with the Patriots?  It is the Red Sox owners who bought Liverpool.

I just used the Patriots name in order to make a reference to the the six states in the USA that are sometimes collectively referred to as 'New England'. I apologize if I confused you by mentioning the Patriots NFL team out of context because they are one of two professional 'football' (NFL football vs global football) teams that are from Massachusetts and labeled 'New England'.

I was just making jest of the scenario where fans of the futbol franchise 'Liverpool' might feel uncomfortable knowing that their favorite sports team was now owned by Americans, pejoratively using the phrase 'New' England (New England) to point that there might still by some sort of superficial tension between Great Britain and the USA, at least when it comes to sports. As far as 'international' football is concerned the British tend to look down on American football (soccer) because they feel as though the Barclay's Premier League is superior to the MLS in terms of talent and quality.

There is also the fact that the USA and England met in the 2010 FIFA World Cup during the group stage in Group C, though as you have argued, none of that has to do with the New England Patriots.

2 million for bullpen help = not in the budget but this is?

This is he problem when teams win, owners try to go cheap and sqeeZe as much out of the championships as possible while spending money elsewhere and relying on the ingrown fan base to come out anyway.

Glad the sox got tossed under the bus for budgetary reasons so Henry could buy a team no one in this market cares about though.

I think we are going to be hearing a lot of this.  In reality, I these are completely separate issues, but in the mind of fans, it is going to be a tough publicity hit.

The Sox have a budget.  It is not based on how much money John Henry has, it is based on the business model of the franchise.  Whether the ownership wants to expand their investment portfolio really has little to do with the baseball ops budget, just like if the Sox suddenly start losing money, it is not going to mean they will make cutbacks to the Liverpool budget or the Racing team budget.

The Sox spend a heck of a lot of money on the product they put on the field last year, and I think it is very hard to point to the owners for not putting enough money up to win.  The fact that a large portion of the budget was flushed down the drain on ineffective players (or players who were a high injury risk) should be the bigger concern.

As a Liverpool FC fan I am very happy if this sale goes through mainly because of the history behind the new owner. He seems to be good at finding good business opportunities in the sporting world (first Red Sox and now LFC), and transform them back to the glory days.

The opportunity of acquiring Liverpool FC is actually a sound investment despite the 300m pound price tag. It will leave the new owner in good position to continue with new stadium plans to expand the fan base which is huge worldwide. Despite a huge brand name, it is quite unbelieaveable how little marketing has been done with Liverpool FC. Good purchase for the Red Sox owner...absolutely!
In Danny Ainge I Trust!

As a Man Utd fan, I am very happy about this. We need Liverpool back as contenders. I hate 'Pool but I still want them to do good. We need that rivalry back, just like we needed us (Boston) to be good, thus reviving the Laker rivalry. It just adds that extra layer that makes sports so entertaining.

Too bad all of y'all will be LFC fans from now on  ;D

Uh yeah...as the transaction isn’t yet complete, Liverpool’s ownership is currently American (Tom Hicks and George Gillett).  The fans have been far from happy with that ownership group (not sure on the exact details, but the growing debt was one reason) and I am sure they will welcome the change.

Liverpool is basically the Celtics of the Premier League, but with the following of the Red Sox. I say they are the Celtics because they have led in League Titles for a while and only recently Manchester United has tied them up in that department. Also have 5 European titles.

Some interesting developments in the ongoing Liverpool drama:

Quote
The case to decide the future ownership of Liverpool Football Club will be heard in the High Court on Tuesday.

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), the club's major creditors, have submitted an application to the court against co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Hicks and Gillett, who bought the Reds in March 2007, owe RBS £240m but are blocking the £300m sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV).

The American duo have opposed the sale as they say it undervalues the club.

The case is one of a number to be heard by Mr Justice Floyd at 1030 BST and revolves around whether chairman Martin Broughton has the authority to sell Liverpool to NESV against the wishes of Hicks and Gillett.

The bidding contest for Liverpool FC may not be over, the BBC can reveal.

The runner-up in the contest, Peter Lim, a Singapore billionaire, is to approach Liverpool's board with a view to making a higher offer for the club.

Quote
Mr Lim learned he was not the victor only a few hours before the club's chairman, Martin Broughton, announced on 6 October that Liverpool would be sold to John Henry's New England Sport Ventures for £300m;

He believes that in purely monetary terms, his offer was at least as attractive as Mr Henry's.

Mr Lim, too, was offering to repay all of Royal Bank of Scotland's and Wachovia's £200m of long-term debt, to take on £60m of other debt and to inject £40m of working capital.

What's more - and Mr Lim regards this as crucial - all the money being provided by him would come from his own cash resources. He is not planning to borrow any of it.
