On Paper this looks like a dominant team regardless of age. When Perk comes back our 11th man is Shaq and our 12th man is Von Wafer.

Since we have obviously not played any games. I ask you is this the best team the Celtics have had on Paper since 1986?

Kane

Does it include the Boston Celtics team from the '86 NBA Draft 'til Len Bias' death?  Those few days?

On paper I'll take the 2007-2008 team any day of the week.

This team has superior depth, but Garnett was a legitimate MVP level of player still at that point. Ray Allen and Paul Pierce were also significantly better.

The top 3 of your roster determines a lot more about where you end up in the NBA than 4 - 15.

I would say on paper the '87 Celtics were better, and the 2010 Celts were, too.  This is the *deepest* championship contender that we've had in a long, long time, but in terms of quality on paper, I'd say the two teams I named were better.

Of course, in the case of those two teams, expectations weren't met, for whatever reason.  The '87 team was doomed by injuries, and last year Rasheed and Marquis underperformed compared to what people thought they'd do when we looked at the season on paper.

  • Rondo = Good
Depth =/= greatness.

Deep?  Yes.  Great?  No.

The '08 team was better.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

I could really go either way on this one, that is, this years or the 08 team. KG probably is the difference maker since he was so dominant in 08. The thing is though, as dominant as his D was then his rebounding was just ok.

That being said, I will take this years squad. Shaq is an element that we certainly didnt have in 08. We all know his game but what will be very interesting is to watch how he can somewhat change his game to compliment this team. Rondo is significanlty better then in 08, maybe almost as much better as KG is worse. While I agree with whoever said that positions 1-3 are more important in the playoffs then 4-15 you still need to get to the playoffs healthy and nothing is better for that then a deep roster. This years squad is a big gamble as far as age, health go but if we can get into the playoffs healthy then I really like our chances. Perk's return will be the difference in a title or a deep run, everything else constant.

That team looked REALLY good on paper

PG. Dennis Johnson, Jerry Sichsting
SG. Danny Ainge, Darren Daye
SF. Larry Bird, Len Bias, Scott Wedman
PF. Kevin McHale, Fred Roberts
 C. Robert Parish Bill Walton

Len Bias could have really helped that team bad. I just realized that Larry and Kevin were above 3,000 MP, then DJ and Chief were above 2,900... no wonder those guys died out in the playoffs.

Really depends on how you value our aging superstars.  From strictly a career perspective, you could argue that this team gives the '86 team a run for it's money; however, that's not taking into account the decline that Shaq and others have experienced.
