Had a few questions about Celtics fans in general, the Celtics popularity, attendance, and rivalries.


1)  Just how big/popular are the Celtics in the BOS market absolute and relatively?
-Is Boston like the other Northeast markets (NY and Philly) where it's:

baseball....football.............................................basketball..hockey
-(or the reverse in Philly's case)

-Just how popular are the Celtics overall?  In most cities basketball is 3rd or 4th and well behind the baseball and football.  In some hockey is even more popular or at least pretty close...is this the case in BOS?


2)  How do the Celtics popularity wise rank on BOS sports hierachry ALL THINGS equal?
-How does it compare (the NBA) in BOS to say in Philly or NY?
-How do the Celtics all things equal compare to the Bruins?
-How close is the NHL to the NBA in Boston compared to the cities and how close is the NBA to MLB/NFL compared to those cities?


3)  At TD Bank, do the Celtics get a lot of visiting fans?
-The Bruins usually get a decent amount of
Montreal/Toronto/Detroit/New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia/Buffalo fans

-Do the Celtics have a lot of New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia/Los Angelos/Chicago/Cleveland/Other? fans at home...how bad is it compared to the Bruins?


4)  Just how big is the NY BOS rivalry in basketball?  
-Do you consider them to be your biggest rival?
-Also..do you get a lot of NY Knick fans at home...what is the usual percent of Knick fans at TD Bank?


5)  Finally...do the Celtics draw well on the road?

A.  What has been surprising to me is how the Red Sox usually always have a lot of fans on the road...as do the Pats.
However, comparitively, it seems like the Celtics have MUCH less of a presence on the road.
-When I saw playoff games at Miami/Orlando/Atlanta..all markets that usually a traditional fanbase would dominate...the Celtics did not have a big prescence.
-You would think given that the Celtics have been around the NBA since day 1, arein sports hungry city, are the most successful NBA franchise, and currently a top contender, they would be like the Red Sox on the road.

-Is this the case?
-If not why?
-Is this just proof the Boston is not a big NBA town or not as appreciative other towns would be...or is it deceptive?


B.  The Bruins bring a decent amount of fans to New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia/Montreal/Toronto/Buffalo and so fourth.
-What about the Celtics...how is your road turnout...particularly in New York...relative to the Bruins?

Saw an article this week on how the Bruins have sold out season tickets for next season.
Saw an article last week on how the Knicks have sold out season tickets for next season.

Got me wondering...why is it then when I go on the Celtics site not only is there no news on the Celtics selling out season tickets..but they still are advertising it?

To me...it makes no sense.  I mean if the Bruins, who have won nothing in a long time, and are coming off the worst choke job ever, are selling out, why wouldn't the Celtics who just won it 2 years ago and made the finals last year not?

Likewise...if the Knicks...the Knicks...a pathetic franchise with only 2 titles who MIGHT be a playoff team this year are going to sell out...how is the Celtics aren't?

To me...it just seems this is confirmation that there really is not much of a buzz about the Celtics/that Boston is more into the Bruins or hockey than basketball/that New York is much more of a Knick/NBA town than Boston.
It always seemed to me the Celtics for all the success they have had past and present have not gotten the buzz and popularity to go with it and this seems futher proof.

Am I right or can someone explain?

To me...it just seems this is confirmation that there really is not much of a buzz about the Celtics/that Boston is more into the Bruins or hockey than basketball/that New York is much more of a Knick/NBA town than Boston.

Just my 2 cents as a lifelong Rhode Islander:

1)  Just how big/popular are the Celtics in the BOS market absolute and relatively?
-Is Boston like the other Northeast markets (NY and Philly) where it's:

-Just how popular are the Celtics overall?  In most cities basketball is 3rd or 4th and well behind the baseball and football.  In some hockey is even more popular or at least pretty close...is this the case in BOS?

-->New England is baseball country, especially Red Sox, first and foremost.  None of the others are close.  After that, it depends on how the Pats, Bruins and Celts are doing to see which league becomes the fan favorite. 
--When the Celts were great in the 70's and particularly the 80's, they were huge here.  Attention died off in the 90's and 00's when they went downhill. 
--The Pats get some attention but it really picked up with the Superbowl wins.  I suspect that when Brady retires or the team settles into mediocrity for a couple of seasons, they'll be off the radar again.
--The Bruins always have the underdog status.  People want them to do well and they become really popular if they show any reasonable signs of life.  If they're having a down year, they don't get a lot of attention.


3)  At TD Bank, do the Celtics get a lot of visiting fans?
-->nope, too loaded with Celtic fans, just as it should be

4)  Just how big is the NY BOS rivalry in basketball? 
--Lakers are the biggest rivalry.  Sixers/Knicks are well behind them--->they need to actually become good to get the rivalry back.

5)  Finally...do the Celtics draw well on the road?
-->they seem to based on all the green shirts I see in the stands during the road game broadcasts.  sort of how the Yankees always draw fans to whatever stadium they're playing in on the road.
