From what I saw in the summer league, I didn't much like his game at all.  He looked super soft, so I really hope Danny will go out and get another big to go along with Oneal.

Erden would be a developmental player along the lines of Perk/O'Bryant etc.  Some work out and some don't.  I like what I saw in SL.  Erden has improved each game as he's gotten used to his teammates.

Danny can have up to 15 players on the roster, Mencius.  There's plenty of roster space for Erden to develop.

Even if it is guaranteed, it doesn't really matter, since it was a rookie minimum deal.  If they need the roster spot, they will cut him.

I did see enough flashes to give him a shot though.  He seems like a decent project.

I don't think he has much potential to him.

I think becoming a third string center is pretty much his ceiling. I don't know maybe he can be a serviceable (below average but useful) fifth big in the depth chart.

I do think he'd make a solid third string center though which is good considering where he was drafted.

If he shows flashes, he'll be 15th-man and have to spend the bulk of his rookie salary on nice suits to sit at the end of the bench.  They'll give him a year and see how he progresses under their coaching, let him work with Clifford Ray for a while.

He's got a better chance at sticking than Lafayette or Gaffney, if for no other reason than it's harder to find a seven footer.

15th man's not going to make much difference, regardless.  Don't think they'll count on him for one iota of contribution this season, they'll sign Kwame (or re-sign The Slumlord) to be the backup 5.  Some NBA-established vet-min type.

I don't think he'll ever be a center. Summer league fodder was able to push him around with ease. If we're lucky, he'll be a PF of the Vareajo mold, but I just don't see the same drive in him.

I think he could be a second string center.  It is early to tell, but he has size, and seems to have decent athleticism.  If he has decent hands (they looked terrible in the first game, and good in the third...did he play in the 4th?), he could end up being very serviceable.

I also will say that he does seem to have at least some idea of how to play basketball, which I wasn't really expecting.  I have seen decent positioning, very good picks (mixed in with some terrible ones though), and an overall awareness.

I am at least intrigued to see him in the preseason, since the summerleague is terrible for big men.  I am not sure he can't become a decent backup center in this league.  And possibly even within the next couple of years.  His body is there, he just needs to learn quickly.

I expect Erden to be a good complementary offensive player but a defensive liability and a below average rebounder.

I think his negatives defensively and on the glass will stop him being worthy of a spot in a team's rotation.

I need to see more of him.  I actually saw some good things from him defensively in glimpses.  But he certainly still has a ways to go.

My problem may be that I am comparing him to POB, who had absolutely no idea how to play defense, so anything better I take as a positive.
