Salmons opts out of deal
by BILL SCOTT on JUNE 30, 2010

Milwaukee Bucks forward John Salmons opted out of the final year of his contract on Tuesday, a move the Bucks had expected since the season ended.

The move means Salmons will be an unrestricted free agent tomorrow (Thursday) when NBA teams are allowed to begin contract discussions with free agents.

The Bucks say they remain very interested in re-signing the 6′6 shooting guard to a multi-year deal, after he averaged 19.9 points a game and was a key ingredient to the Bucks march to the playoffs.

I know Salmons will be to expensive for us to get, but I'm just wondering what people think the open market will be for John.

I would love to get Salmons for the MLE contract he just opted out of. Love, love, love LOVE that.

Salmons is an MLE player, and that has not changed.  But he will likely get a max MLE deal for 5 years.  If he didn't opt out, he could be getting significantly less in the new CBA.

Any chance you believe we could do that or would the years be to much like Chris is saying for five years.

How old is he now?  I'm hoping for a younger option than Mike Miller--someone worth committing a 5-year MLE deal to besides perhaps Outlaw.

I think Chris is spot on. Its the same reason Dirk opted out I believe. They don't want their salaries to be tied to a decreasing cap figure.

Also I think Dirk opted out so he can get his no trade clause put in.

Not a huge of Salmons to the Celtics.  Especially when I think of the $$ and years it would cost.  I wouldn't toss the entire MLE.  He's just too much of a gunner and too erratic for my taste.

Yeah, I think he is fools gold.  He is just good enough to be a significant player on a mediocre team, but, much like Tony Allen, is not well suited to a very good team.

He's never been on a very good team. I guess I can see the Tony Allen comparision, but like bizzaro Tony Allen where instead of being a defensive talent he was a scorer with a sound jumpshot.

Chad Ford just reported the following:

The Bucks and John Salmons have finally come to terms on a deal. It's 5 years, $39 million, but the deal has partial guarantees in it, so in reality, Salmons could be earning less if things don't work out down the road.

Bucks now have Maggette and Salmons, Chris Douglas-Roberts, and Drew Gooden to put around Jennings, Ilyasova, Mbah a Moute, and Bogut. A solid squad, but not exactly world-beaters.

The ensemble cast doesn't usually win a title - and for them to do so you usually need very good defenders (I'd put 80's DET and 2004 DET, maybe BOS 2008 in the ensemble category.) However, during the season you could easily see this team playing really well and inflating the value of some of their guys' value and maybe they can make a KG for Jefferson type deal in the offseason.

They do have Michael Redd's gigantic expiring contract to throw at a team at this year's deadline.

A little surprised about the Gooden signing. Won't he impede the development of Ilyasova and Mba a Moute?
