Free agency was forever LeBron James’(notes)  chase, the Championship of Me, and how fitting that he uses the most vacuous vehicle of our time – the “Larry King Show” – to upstage an NBA Finals rich with such history and substance. As the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers gather for a championship series to remind us of what built the league, what made it great, here’s LeBron James with a public ode on LeBron James.

“I’m the ringleader,” he told King.

Only, he has no rings.

Quote
He seems more enthusiastic about this than he did trying to beat the Celtics,” said one Western Conference GM. “I mean, who goes on Larry King to talk about ‘when I become a free agent’?”

Quote
All these years, all these stars who lived for June, and now maybe the most gifted of them all has never stopped talking about July. No judgment. No shame. The ringleader is still searching for something.

I love that article and definitely agree with it. However, I would also point out that the media, and us for following the stories so closely play a role as well. I think if everyone didnt click on the espn articles about lebron and left comments like "hey lets talk about the finals and deal with this later" there would be a lot less coverage. Plus in this day and age we all have a media overload.

I have to say that one of the most satisfying things about this year's playoffs has been watching the Celtics dismiss LeBron and Howard in back-to-back series -- two very talented players who have allowed themselves to become ridiculously over-exposed before actually winning anything, and who seem more interested in their own exposure than in figuring out how to be part of a winning team.  Well, they've been exposed all right.

2008 in contrast was satisfying in a different, more workmanlike way: from the legitimate challenge of the youthful athleticism of the Hawks, to a proven Cavs team that has tasted the Finals the year before, to a proven ex-Champion in the Pistons.  2008 was about earning it.  2010 is about proving we're still a better team than the competition.  The Lakers will be a worthy challenge in that regard; but so far, so good.

Good post. TP.

P.S. that article was awesome.
Grab a few boards, keep the TO's under 14, close out on shooters and we'll win.

Aside from the Dunk Contests (which I think were pretty cool) and a few commercials with Charles Barkley, how much self promotion does howard really do? If anything he seems to slightly deflect the spotlight. He is just such a physical freak and unique basketball player it cant be avoided.

The more I listen to Jackie MacMullan talk about basketball on WEEI, the more I love her.

I'm glad someone said it.  Its almost as if he thinks the more he overexposes himself the less likely we will be to remember that he is not yet Kobe, or Pierce, or Wade, or Billups, or one of a dozen other star wing players who has won it all since he entered the league.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
It seems that Lebron has no sense of urgency when it comes to winning a ring. He seems to believe that it will come eventually or that it's promised to him. His attitude has been a real turn off for me as of late. I thought he had more of a killer attitude, but it seems he's really just a big kid.

Because he couldn't win a title in Cleveland, Lebron has nothing to look forward to than FA.

I can't blame Lebron for anything. His FA bonanza is his next hope for winning a title.

Spot on article. I don't want to hear a word from james. I could careless that he picked us. This series is so anti-NBA these days. They want to promote individuals and not teams. Lebrick can have his ESPN top 10 plays, we'll just keep playing for titles and raising banners.

Even when the messiah has a comment it's the equal of no comment.

Great article by Woj

Great article by Woj
my point is simply people keep wanting interviews with him, people keep speculating about where he will end up, etc.

The problem isn't Lebron, it is the media, the fans, and everyone else that keeps writing articles about his free agency, that keep asking him about his free agency, that keep speculating about his free agency, that keep talking about this "free agent summit", etc.

You can't fault Lebron here, it isn't his fault.

I wonder who the messiah will hire as his new GM?  His new coach?  Is the messiah negotiating with himself for his next Cavs contract?
